Today is the 20th anniversary of the F5 tornado that hit Oak Grove High School

The picture was on al.com today, and I thought I'd share with the OT. The high school and elementary school were destroyed. The storm came through after 7:30 pm on a Wednesday, so the school was empty. No one was killed there, although the tornado ended up killing 32 and injuring 250. It destroyed 1000 homes and damaged 900 more.

I hadn't even turned 7 when that tornado hit and I still vividly remember seeing my mom cry watching the news and how much the pictures of the destruction scared me.

That was a monster of a tornado. We drove around that area a few months after it came through, and there was a spot where you could see about a mile towards the horizon and everything in about a 1/4 swath was just leveled.
That's the storm that prompted James Spann to preempt anything else on the TV when the wind starts blowing.

Hard to believe it’s been 20 yrs. I remember that being one of the scariest events ever,even though I lived in Houston at the time. I had a lot of family that lived in Rock Creek and the surrounding areas and there was no way to get in touch with them to find out if they were ok. I visited family in Rock Creek about a year later and it was an eerie feeling seeing all the damage and not recognizing a lot of the area where I lived as a kid.
