So stupid to do this before he wins anything. Contracts like this are a curse.

Only thing that matters is the buyout. How much was his buyout increased?

He's got the inside track to winning his 2nd SEC Title in 3 years. He's going to be a Top 2 seed in the NCAAT for the 2nd time in 3 years. He's won like 70% of his games. He had a "bad" season last year and was a 6 seed. If he goes to the S16 this year it will be the first time we've had 2 S16s in a 3 year span since 1990/1991.

He's done more than enough to get a big, long contract at Alabama. He isn't just getting this because of November to January 2022/23.

And on the flip side we have "refuses to accept his school is hiring the interim coach" Texas fan.

Nobody cares about conference titles in basketball, it only matters what you do in the tournament. That’s why y’all should have waited. Now he’s set for life and all he’s done is get y’all one sweet 16. Ya screwed up.

No, we're good. He's made the NCAAT almost every season he's been a head coach. He's going to have us in the tournament basically every season. If he goes to the Sweet 16 half the time and breaks through past that 1 or 2 times in his career he'll have a great career here.

We're good with that.

In four years:

Sweet 16
SEC Regular Season Championship
SEC Tournament Championship
SEC Coach of the Year
Top 5 Recruiting Class

Currently projected as the No. 2 overall seed (in February), despite playing the toughest OOC schedule in the nation.

What are your thoughts?

If I'm Bama, my only reservation with Oats would be that he also has several early round exits in the NCAA tournament, but he is a good coach and the contract seems fair based on what he has accomplished.

I hoped for more in 2021 but we made the Sweet 16, which for us at the time was still a pretty major deal. We had done that 1 time since 1992 prior to that (Gottfried in 2004). He actually won 2 games as a lower seed while at Buffalo.

If he has us in the tournament every year - especially as a Top 4-5 seed most years - then we'll be fine with it (and I think it's reasonable to expect 1 of them to get hot at the right time).

All we want is a program that competes at the top of the league and is in the tournament every year with a few years where we really have a chance to make some noise. I see no reason to think he will fall from that level anytime soon.

We aren't new to it at all. We have different expectation levels than you do based on historical performance.

I agree, and think concern would be warranted if he had gotten a Calipari-style deal.

All considered, this seems fair to both sides, and leaves incentives in place to encourage continued success.

That’s why your expectation of going to the sweet 16 half the time is silly. Those are really high expectations. Kentucky is one of the best basketball programs ever and they only go to the sweet 16 about 30 percent of the time historically.

Half the time when we're a high seed (1-4 seed) (like 2021 and this year).

No, not like half of his seasons as coach. That'd be a very high bar.

- make the tournament most every year
- have a Top 10 level, top 2-3 seed team every 4-5 years
- make a couple of tournament runs either as a high seed or a hot at the right time lower seed

That's really about it, at least for me.

Oh, gotcha. I was thinking that was a really high bar.

Oats has only had three postseasons to draw from, and has reached the S16 33% of that time.

If he makes it this year, he will be sitting at 50%.

By your logic, that merits a contract extension historically, yet you also say we "screwed up."

Too small of a sample size, that’s why I think y’all should have waited. Having a good team like you do now makes the admin itchy to keep the good feelings going so they throw a bunch of money and buyouts at the coach. Only one sweet 16 doesn’t warrant such a big extension and buyout IMO.

Nah obviously Texas was courting him. Bama did a good thing by getting ahead of them and locking him up. Lol at Texas.

I agree oats hasn't earned it but it is a wise investment on future returns

Similar timing to Bruce's extension last season with the Louisville and Maryland jobs open. Not a bad move by bama, and probably needed to be done.
