Alabama coach Nate Oats has agreed to a new six-year, $30 million contract amid the program’s best regular season in decades.

Oats will average $5 million plus incentives over the deal running through the 2028-29 season under a deal approved Friday by the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees Compensation Committee.

It makes him the fourth-highest paid basketball coach in the Southeastern Conference and among the Top 10 nationally, athletic director Greg Byrne said.

Oats, who is in his fourth season, will make $4.5 million for the first year with $200,000 annual raises. The fourth-ranked Crimson Tide (19-3, 9-0 SEC) has the team’s highest ranking this deep into a season since 1976-77.

Alabama has gone 80-39 under Oats, winning the 2021 SEC regular season and tournament championships.

Now time for the shift from “Oats to _____” to “He’s not even that good bro.”

Just as nature intended

He ranks fourth among SEC men's basketball coaches in annual compensation this season behind Kentucky's John Calipari ($8.5 million), Tennessee's Rick Barnes ($5.45 million) and Auburn's Bruce Pearl ($5.4 million).

Buyout table:

"Those first two years especially would be one of the highest buyouts in men's college basketball in the country."

If he wins an NCAA Tournament championship, Oats will make $650,000 based on incentives for NCAA participation, wins in the pre-Final Four rounds, and the wins in the Final Four and championship game.

So that puts him behind who, Calipari, Barnes and Muss? If so, that's a pretty good deal for Bama.

Nope.

The original cost estimate of $183 million has ballooned to almost $250 million, athletics director Greg Byrne told Nate Oats last week.

Byrne and Alabama school president Stuart Bell both spoke about the impact of nationwide inflation, especially in facility construction, on its plans for the 10,136-seat venue.

“Greg and I are on the same page with this,” Oats said. “We both know it’s a high priority. The department’s fully behind it. Can’t snap your fingers and it’s done, though. We’re all on the same page, to be honest with you.”

But Oats continued to stress that the team’s practice facility where it spends the majority of its time is more important to players and coaches, and Alabama’s renovated practice gym compares favorably to NBA teams’ hubs that he has visited.

“I’ve said it before: the arena is a bigger deal for the fans, the donors, the people who come and watch the game than the players and the coaches that coach in it. We’re getting great support in here.”

In four years:

Sweet 16
SEC Regular Season Championship
SEC Tournament Championship
SEC Coach of the Year
Top 5 Recruiting Class

Currently projected as the No. 2 overall seed (in February), despite playing the toughest OOC schedule in the nation.

What are your thoughts?
