Not only have teams decided to go to extreme up-tempo, passing offenses, but the targeting rule has a lot to do with this as well, in my opinion.

The targeting rule has helped open up the passing game. If a defender makes a tackle incorrectly, you're sitting out for a half of football. Gone are the days where a player can obliterate the receiver to break up the pass. That used to happen all the time, now the announcers say, "That may have been targeting." It's definitely affected the game defensively.
