1986 Georgia-Auburn
Great game and coupled with LSU's 47-0 win over Miss State 300 miles west on U.S.80 gave guaranteed LSU at least a share of the SEC Title.
Typical Vince Dooley team sans Herschel where Georgia excelled in defense and special teams and would do just enough on offense to win. Auburn had been a total surprise in the year after Bo rising as high as #5 before losing to Florida two weeks earlier.
The loss coupled with LSU's win eliminated Auburn from a share of the SEC Title. But the aftermath of the game was truly weird. For starters an inordinate amount of Georgia fans, presumably students, stormed the field and midfield logo in particular grabbing blades of grass. After multiple warnings to leave the playing field, many fans stayed on the field. Auburn game management then made the decision to turn water cannons on and turn them toward the field to encourage people to leave the premicise.
No problem with that. But what happened next was inexcusable and inexplicable. While the PA announcer was imploring fans to return to the stands the water cannons were then directed towards the Georgia fans still in their seats merely celebrating their teams' win. Pat Dye was not only Auburn's head coach but athletic director made things worse by refusing to accept any blame in this idiodic move still blaming Georgia supporters. ESPN who broadcast the game showed several seemingly elderly fans in the stands being hit with the water cannons.

Pat Dye was a low life drunk, lived his life in a bottle and made many poor judgements.
He was the very definition of "Piss down his leg drunk."

When a dog shits on your lawn spraying them off with the garden hose is justified.

Coach Dye laughed about it, he said they needed a bath anyway.

I remember people showing up at the Auburn game the next season wearing fireman helmets.

And i have no problem with them turning them on the kids on the field. In their defense, Auburn asked them not to go on the field several times. The ones on the field deserved everything they got and more. I THINK Auburn had just put down some new turf, if I am not mistaken.
My problem came when they turned the hoses on the fans in the stands. And the OP was correct. Several elderly fans were injured by them. It was just bad all around.

That’s really low. Speak ill of the dead. Typical Thug.
BTW, Dye had hemachromatosis - iron storage disease that affects the liver.
He was not a drunk.
