Back then, heavy duty sprinklers and industrial hoses were used to water large areas. You do know the difference between a sprinkler and a hose don't you? Those sprinklers could shoot water 50 yards which was why there was one at each corner of the field

People in Alabama kinda have a history of turning hoses on people they ought not to.

the previous year Auburn fans had torn up the hedges in Athens and Georgia fans were looking for revenge in Auburn. That was the reason Auburn turned on the sprinklers, it was preplanned

And i have no problem with them turning them on the kids on the field. In their defense, Auburn asked them not to go on the field several times. The ones on the field deserved everything they got and more. I THINK Auburn had just put down some new turf, if I am not mistaken.
My problem came when they turned the hoses on the fans in the stands. And the OP was correct. Several elderly fans were injured by them. It was just bad all around.
This is the most level headed and accurate assessment of the event. The people on the field were fair game, the people in the stands were not
