In our recent lifetimes' the SEC has risen in prominence and power. I believe highlighted with ESPN contract, the addition of the two new teams, and the addition of the next two teams, and has completely changed the landscape with SEC as the dominant force.
Please in rank order list the programs most responsible for this success.

1. Alabama
Alabama took the dominance of the SEC which began in the late-aughts and magnified it by a factor of 100.

2. Florida
Got the ball truly rolling on the whole "SEC! SEC! SEC!" pride with their win over Ohio State in the national championship game.

3. LSU
They have been the second most consistent team in the SEC this century behind Alabama and have represented the conference well in New Orleans - that 2012 title game aside.

Since 2000

1. LSU and Saban kick started the arms race.

2. Florida and Urban kinda kept momentum going.

3. Alabama and Saban help evolve the SEC into what it is today.

Honorable Mentioned
-Auburn-

I think them not having a chance to play for National championship help spur change in the SEC not be left out anymore.

I guess I agree with the first answer.
Alabama
Florida
LSU

I think Auburn could definitely be listed as fourth.

After that it gets very murky listing programs like Georgia Tennessee and Texas A&m

Most recent ascension... Exactly what in the hell has Tenn & A&M recently done to help the ascension of the SEC?

I was picking a time frame of our recent lifetimes grossly corresponding with maybe two or three decades, and in that time in the very beginning Tennessee was a big program a national program won a national title. I believe they are far down the list because for a very long time recently they have been a bad program.
Texas A&M's contribution has nothing to do with wins. It has to do with being a big program, adding a big state to the footprint, getting a lot of exposure with manziel and the Heisman, and having the unique position I believe of coming into the SEC, hurting the big 12, and being a key point in bringing very big programs Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC later.

Florida 41, Ohio State 14. Far and away the biggest factor in the rise of the SEC to the pinnacle. ESPN should have had a headline reading,

Holy shite! How Did We Miss That?

For some reason a "strong conference" has to have the mix of a couple of really strong teams, a couple of role player teams, and the rest can be pure garbage.

With that, it certainly has been important that teams like LSU have been able to win a title, so it's not been "all Alabama and nothing else ", like it's been with the ACC and to a lesser extent the B1G.

So, to answer the OP question and knowing the above formula, I'd have to put equal emphasis on the schools that have done something: Alabama, LSU, Florida, and Auburn

MSU

When we finished 5th in the west in 2010 with a 9-4 record and ranked 15th and dismantled Michigan 54-14 in the bowl game is when people realized how strong this conference is top to bottom. Without that the SEC wouldn’t have gotten the respect it does.

Y’all are welcome

Saban and Alabama have actually caused the SEC to diminish in quality teams top to bottom

Too many teams trying to chase them led to coaching changes and ultimately the demise of the programs.

Peak SEC was 2008-2015. You had Saban, Urban, Miles, Richt.

Petrino at Arkansas
Spurrier at USCe
Franklin at vandy
Mullen at MSU
Freeze at OM

Auburn with Cam
Florida with Tebow
Mizzou won the east twice
Arkansas was top 10 program
MSU and OM top 10 in 2014
USCe had a couple 11 win seasons under SS
Then of course your usual Alabama and LSU teams

Conference had a lot more parity those years.

Tennessee won the first BCS national title and Texas A&M gave the college football world Johnny Manziel and helped kickstart the SEC Network by virtue of adding Texan eyeballs.

Although I’d love to point to the 2003 LSU team as the one that kicked it off, I think the initiator was Florida.

I’d say Florida’s D Line in the NCG was the first “Oh crap” moment for the rest of the country that kicked off the run.

LSU kept it going.

Bama got rolling and stomped the entirety of college football into a mud hole.

So I guess my order of “most responsible for ascension” would go:

1. Florida (initiated)
2. Bama (most dominant)
3. LSU (most consistent until Bama’s run)

Tennessee’s title was a one-off. It’s no different than OU’s title. It didn’t kick off a run for the conference or change the SEC perception.

JFF? All conferences have great individual talents.

In all honesty, Miami started what we see today. As far as SEC schools go, I would say Florida in the 90s had the biggest influence. The state of Florida was the most dominant presence of college football for over a decade. Between 88-2002, one of the big 3 in Florida either played for or won the national title all except for 90 and 97. That is a crazy stat
