Orgeron on offseason QB competition: “We in the locker room know who the best player is"

Heading into the upcoming season, LSU has arguably the most heated quarterback competition in the country with Myles Brennan and Max Johnson both gunning for the starting role in Baton Rouge.
Considering the wealth of talent on the roster in Baton Rouge, if Ed Orgeron and his offensive coaching staff select the best option to start at quarterback, the Tigers should have the firepower to play with anyone this season.
But making that decision won’t be easy.
While LSU was a major disappointment last season, Brennan was an exception, throwing for 1,112 yards and 11 touchdowns in just three games of action. Those three starts were Brennan’s first meaningful action since the 2017 season.
On the other hand, once Johnson got comfortable on the field, he managed to lead the Tigers to the biggest upset of the season, beating three-touchdown favorite Florida in the Swamp before helping LSU become the only team to beat Ole Miss down the stretch of the season and outdueling Matt Corral in the process.
During a recent appearance on Mike Detillier’s “Sports Talk” show on WWL, Orgeron was asked to share the latest on the quarterback competition down in Baton Rouge.
“We in the locker room know who the best player is, there ain’t no question, everybody knows. It’s going to work itself out and I’m going to let them play,” Orgeron said on the show. “The competition is going to be fierce every day. I told them, everything that you do (will be studied and evaluated) and you know, both those guys along with Garrett [Nussmeier], having some great summers.
“I think it’s going to work itself out. I think it’s going to be obvious. And obviously, you know, game week going into UCLA, we are going to name our starter; but if we could do it before, we can. It’s all going to be a feel thing.”
Now we wait to find out who that will be.

This comes off the wrong way… Imagine being the other guy when you aren’t named the starter and then remember your coach said this…

He's an idiot. He has no clue how absurd he sounds.

Whoever loses the QB battle will transfer anyway.

He’s such a fricking idiot

Message is delivered exactly at this point. Remembering anything else is just revelation.
However, to your point, Coach O is to thoughtful in his choice for words what sandpaper is to silk. He more than offsets with just being lovable to many. Just not the 2nd string QB.

Yes, but if they know now then why don’t they name him now? You’ve just admitted that you think one guy is far better than the other. If the other guy is going to transfer, let him transfer now instead of making him practice with the team and think he has a shot at winning the job.

Working on a big NIL deal to ensure that he stays as back up QB on LSU's roster
Perhaps

shite, that's actually an interesting hypothetical (for any team).

So you UCLA has all summer to prepare for 1 guy instead of 2? Nah. If 8 didn't have to name a starter i wouldn't. The starter may already know and they don't want it public.

He better know who it is unless he wants another mess of a season on his hands.

O always says the wrong thing when it comes to in house matters. I can name three off the top of my head.
I didn’t interview Bo Pelini
Our defense this year (2019)is better in every way than last year (2020)
Jones was my fourth choice for DC
He needs to not be so transparent.

Wouldn't that make the situation worse?

He has to be, he’s got daddy’s close friends in the media and he’s gotta feed his allies, especially since he chaps Woodys arse every couple months.

No doubt, the man talks way too much.

Brennan would but I'd be surprised if Johnson did.

Yep I would say it’s a given. It’s certainly odd for LSU to have such a wealth at QB but our freshman Nuss. has shown a lot of potential and we have Walker Howard coming next year. I hope that Max is the choice but I could see either one as the starter.

Has he really? Good for him.
Makes sense as a 4-star, but sometimes it's hard to tell about those QBs with well-known last names.
(We've had a few of those pass through and never see the field.)
