Although this was a close year with so many coveted WRs, it appears Wes Chandler of Florida will still hold the record at 3rd pick overall after the 1979 season. He was a two time AA and had skills that were unmatched.
He played in a wishbone offense when 10 passes in a game would be high. He even played a little bit at RB and QB in 1979 when the cupboard was bare. The wishbone we had was lethal back in 1974-76, but we didnt have a great defense.

Fouts to Chandler was a thing of beauty. Too bad they didn't have the chance to play longer together.

Looks like we found the problem with his career.

That Chargers team was fun to watch with the air attack.

I stand corrected, it was after the 1977 season. If Chandler could have played in the current era of wide open passing.. he might have been a Heisman winner. Except for the 76 season (and even then passing was mediocre), the qbs were really rbs and the wishbone would give defenses fits.
Back then Bama, AU both used the wishbone and Bama won a NC with it....but they had a stout defense. Eventually teams learned to stack the defense up front with 9 men and the wishbone was then a bygone.

I think OU ran the wishbone into the 1990's. Pretty funny considering how prolific Bama and OU passing attacks are now. OU could run that thing to perfection.

WRs were used as blockers for most of that time.
