I get what you're saying, but there are professional teams around the world that have millions of fans, none of whom have any association with the organization.

College sports are obviously different, but there are plenty of tie-ins with family members and friends, or even vague associations. For example, I know a lot of people in Los Angeles who pull for Alabama solely because they're USC fans and equate the two programs from a historical aspect.

Some kids just find a player, a story, or a style that they like, and become somehow bonded with that team. It really doesn't make them any less of a fan.

I don't know... but you know what is awesome, when you do a non revenue sport and these people show up to out of town competitions at higher rates than your classmates do at home
