You can definitely tell the difference between the new guy and the senior who spent all those years going against our defense on the scout team. "Practice is harder than the games" right?

Tough call.

Not knowing how practice is going, or anything about the JT situation, if i were making a decision based on just these clips, I have to start Mathis again, and if his head still isn't there after a few series, you get Mailman back out there.

What??

You start the guy who won you the game.
Mathis needs a lot more practice.

Mathis needs quality reps and confidence. And the OL to get their shite together. We are lucky to have Bennett in our back pocket to help bail us out but we need to get our potential future guy going and that doesn't happen on the bench.

Mailman came in and save the day. He deserves to get the start, even if it's only for a few drives.

Deserve?

Dwan earned this spot after a hell of alot more time and work than 1Q of football.

If it becomes a pattern then that's different, but starting Mailman at this point would be a slap in the face to Dwan and would project disarray in the program.

Stetson got plenty of attaboys and kirby ran him back out there to take the victory kneel. We know that was Stetsons win. But that doesn't mean you turn the depth chart upside down.

If the coaches literally flipped a coin because they couldn't decide who to start, then Id say yeah start Stetson. But I doubt that's how it went down. Years of adjudicating these two qb's and they started dwan. For a reason, presumably. 1 bad game won't change that.

Or hell maybe they did flip a coin.

You can also say the same about Owen Condon but I sure as hell don't want him to start this Saturday or probably ever again.

Mathis didn't play as poor as Condon but he obviously wasn't as poised as Bennett and didn't make better decisions.

Oof. Rewatching those Mathis highlights is painful.

Lots of lessons, lots of learning in the video for Mathis. Extremely valuable for him. He's on the cusp of greatness, the question is how long do you give him to progress before you give up on him, like so many others have, after a half of a game?

You are putting a single players situation over the teams....

It will be Bennett until it's Daniels.

If Dwan is lucky we create a package for him.

I'm pulling for both Mathis and Bennett for similar reasons. Mathis has an incredible story of adversity that he's had to overcome to get where he is, but so has Bennett, just in a different way. Bennett becoming the hero of the game after being our scout team QB and sitting behind Newman, Mathis, and Daniels is just really inspiring.

I'm hoping that Mathis gets it together and comes out running and gunning with an offensive unit that has cleaned up its issues since last week.

It’s a 10-game conference-only season. Every game is massive. If this was a non-conference noon kick against UL-Monroe, I’d say give Mathis another shot.

We need whoever gets the job done best to start, not to slowly develop confidence in a guy in the middle of the damn Auburn game. Right now, the guy who gets the job done best (that we know of) is Bennett.

Do what works till it don’t work no more.

Bennett throws darts. Cotdam. Even the deep pass out of bounds to Burton had a nice touch. If Burton was an inch and a half taller that would have been a completion. I would like to see what he can do as a starter. I think the only bad pass he had was the completion to Darnel Washington. It looked like the ball was about to sail but Washington used every bit of that 6'8 frame to pull it down.

Agree. Hopefully he can repeat but I don't think it was an accident. His height put him on the scout team, his arm, legs, and head got him promoted. Running from our number 1 defense is as good an experience as a qb can hope for.

Not at all. Its beyond reasonable to start the guy that has proven he can do the job well and has yet to disappoint.

There's a difference between the Mathis offense and Stetson's. Even though he did what they asked fairly well, the fact that they asked less says something about his ability.

Maybe they think UGA needs more than he can do to reach the team's potential.

This is, of course, speculation, but it's certainly plausible.

I noticed that while the coaches subbed in Mathis for mop up duty that they let Bennett take the victor-knee to cap it off. I’m guessing that was their way of rewarding him for his clutch performance off the bench but I wonder if that also means that they won’t feel obligated to give Bennett the start as a reward but let Daniels have a shot or give Mathis a do-over.

I’m interested to see what practice was like this week and who was getting most of the reps with the 1’s.
