Why can 18 year olds be considered responsible enough to vote for President, join the military and fight in a war for us, open credit accounts, buy a home, get married, buy cigarettes, but not buy a drink?

The father of a young woman in my church has been a major supporter and seeking legislation to make pot legal. The one thing is, once you meet him you do see the effects of long term, much use of marijuana. I have mixed feelings about this.

I've gotta be honest. I didn't think this thread would last until Page 2 without this exact post.

I've always questioned that myself.

i'd always heard there was a physiological reason for this. something to do with the brains physical development.
if thats the case its reasonable.

Because LA would lose out on tens of millions each year if we chose to do that.
(Federal govt. + MADD = 21 y/o drinkers)

Well, if the brain is not fully developed, then why should they be in the military, open bank accounts and be allowed to marry or even allowed to have sex?

If I'm not mistaken, the current push isn't even for blanket legalization of marijuana. Its just for small amounts. The dealers moving large quantities would still be prosecuted as they are now.
The number one reason none of these proposals will ever happen, even though they make a lot of sense, is money. The fines, court costs, confiscated property, etc that the state rakes in busting small fry people with weed is more addictive than pot could ever be.

I'm with you on this. I've never been a believer in the "Gateway Drug" premise. How many hardcore drug users smoked tobacco before they smoked weed? How about drank a beer? A person who is going to do an escalating spiral of drugs is probably going to do that regardless of the legality of marijuana.
I know people who smoke the sticky regularly, and have never done anything harder. Smoking weed doesn't MAKE someone think "Hey, I'll try that crystal meth now". Addictive personalities/tendenies will find SOMETHING to get hooked on, whether it be gambling, drinking, or f*@king,...
EDIT: Or TigerDroppings...

why would uncle sam legalize pot when they can't figure out a way to effectively tax it ? much less lost revenue from the court systems (i.e. fines, seizures )

I don't think people actually use the 'gateway drug' argument anymore, do they?
One of the dumbest things I was told when I was in DARE.

I do realize the difficulties there. It just grows too damn easy. For most people though, I'd think the ease of being able to go to the store and get the strain you want would make a lot of people not do it. Not to metion since so much of the cost of weed is wrapped up in it being illegal, there would be much less of an incentive to grow it to sell on the black market.
The only problem would be possible lost revenue from people growing it for personal use. I'm too lazy/have other things to do than care for a bunch of pot plants. I would assume the vast majority are like me.
So my point, the tax situation isn't as big of a deal as people make it out to be.

I may be wrong, but I heard that 18 yr olds can buy and consume alcohol as long as it is on base?

I don't see an issue if laws apply the same as alcohol. Unless your Maurice Clarett and drinking a bottle of grey goose during practice I don't see a problem here.
