There's at least just a big chance that he saw the large percentage of the population in Alabama being black as a good enough reason as that he had a change of heart.
Maybe he left this mortal coil having changed his ways, or maybe was just doing what he always did - be carried the way the political winds blow. Hell, maybe he wasn't racist to start but just figured that would get him in power to begin with.
We'll never know. We can only look at his actions.

When he first popped up he was a moderate on segregation, being Big Jim Folsom's protégé. When John Patterson - a KKK endorsed firebreather on segregation - destroyed him in an openly racist primary in 1958, things went to hell and he became a hardliner on segregation from that point on.
A cautionary tale on the depths to which some will sink for a little power.
