Coach Mainieri was talking about this year's draft & how much each draft varies. He said that Mangum was only drafted as the 119th pick last year & was only paid $20,000. As good as he was in 4 yrs, what was the knock on him that dropped him that far & paid him so little? Hard to believe.

He left as a senior so he didn’t have any leverage. Had to take whatever they offered if he wanted to play

When you’re drafted by a first rate org like the Mets you sometimes pay to play for them

I've wondered this myself. I read an article about how his skill set was uniquely perfect for the college game. But was somehow deficient for the pro game. I think a lot of it is based around hum not being a power hitter for an outfielder. Also, they didn't think he has the arm to throw guys out from the outfield.

If I were a baseball team owner, he's the kind of guy I would want on my roster.

Not a fit for current state of the MLB. If you aren’t a homerun threat then you aren’t a threat apparently. Teams don’t really build around stringing together base hits.

After his Jr. season Mangum turned down bonus offers of $300,000 during the first 10 rounds of the draft. Teams called him saying they would draft him if he would agree to sign for that figure.

Mangum said, “No.” He wanted to return to school at State and try to win a national championship.

Oops. He could have gone to one of those NE leagues or something.
