This new virus is way more powerful than H1N1. There are two metrics that make this considerably more contagious and deadly:
R0 (how infectious it is):
H1N1 = ~1.5
COVID = ~3
CFR (death rate):
H1N1 = 0.08%
COVID = 3.4% (Latest WHO estimate)
This would make this new virus significantly more infectious and fatal than the Spanish flu of 1918 (R0 2, CFR 2.5%), which killed tens of millions of people worldwide. This new virus is disproportionately killing the sick and elderly, as this is already being called the "Boomer Pox."
It ain't the end of the world, but this ain't no typical "flu" either.

I 100% agree with the overall point you're making, as I don't think people understand sometimes the relative comparisons exactly. With that said, Spanish flu in 1918 death total is tough to compare to modern day just given the advancements in available care and general hygiene across the board.
I'm most concerned as we're working on baby #2 here, and really can't afford for my wife to get sick right now... I think a lot of people forget that "immuno-compromised" can include people who aren't chronically sick or elderly. And while she might not be at risk of dying, she certainly is at risk of losing little Fib #2.

The mortality rate is waaaaaaaaay off right now.
The only people getting tested are people who are being hospitalized for it or direct contact with those people.
The fact the mortality rate is only 3% among those who are actually hospitalized for it, tells me it's basically the regular flu.

14% mortality rate if you are over 80... let's say that raw number is legit (it's not), I would say at least 14% of people over 80 are immunocompromised with a condition or medication for something else that makes you immunocompromised.

The "sick and elderly" in China have little or no health care available. That is not a valid statistic at this time.
