Here's all the years Alabama COULD claim a title, if they truly were as loose with the claims as people say:

1925, 1926, 1930, 1934, 1936, 1937, 1941, 1945, 1950, 1961 - 1966, 1973 - 1980, 1991, 1992, 1994, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017

Does Alabama truly have 30 national titles? No, of course not. Don't be absurd.

Does Alabama have the most AP/UPI titles? Yup

Does Alabama have a remarkable enough of a history that 30 times there was a chance they were the best team in the country? Pretty close to it, sure.

quote:

1930 - Notre Dame and Alabama were unbeaten. The majority of humans and numbers side with Notre Dame’s brutal schedule over Alabama’s greater dominance, with SRS considering these Irish an all-time great. Bama’s claims it even though only Notre Dame finishes #1 in Helms and NCF..

Alabama also broke Neyland's 34 game winning streak and gave Tennessee their only loss of the year. As well as shutting out an undefeated Washington State in the Rose Bowl.

quote:

1941 - Minnesota. Alabama claims, but The Tide were shut out twice, finished #20 in the AP Poll, and waited four decades to claim this, based literally on one man’s analysis.

I'm not going to defend the 1941 title. I'm no fan of it. That said, the Houlgate system wasn't some nerd in his basement making shite up. It was published in newspapers all across the country during that time.

But no - we still shouldn't claim it. It's silly.

quote:

1964 - Unbeaten Arkansas UPI. Bama finishes #1 in AP, before its loss in bowl game.

1965 - Alabama. Michigan State claims it, based on a poll released before MSU’s bowl loss.

1973 - Notre Dame beat Alabama in a #1 vs. #3 bowl. But Bama #1 UPI before game.

The debate regarding if Bowl games were part of the season or exhibition games raged on for a good while in the 60s and early 70s, and different coaches approached them differently. Some practiced their players and prepped for the game, while others told the players to enjoy their time on the beach.

Some teams weren't even accepting bowl invites in the 60s, chief among them Notre Dame. Had Alabama simply done what Notre Dame did for all those years and not accepted a bowl invitation at the end of the '64 season, we'd have finished the season undefeated at 10-0. And there would be no complaints except perhaps Arkansas fans arguing that the AP or UPI should have split the national championship between the two schools.

I have no freaking clue why we chose ‘41 instead of ‘45 to stake our claim to. ‘45 we could at least make a decent argument for, although the Army team that year is generally considered one of the greatest teams of all time. ‘41 is inexcusably bad. With our history we leave out legitimate years to claim a year we finished 9-2? So stupid.

I don’t really care, though, and the only people who truly do are the ones who buy a new “Got ##?” shirt after each NC (or fans of other teams, as this thread shows). We have more than anyone else however you count them. Let fans of lesser programs squabble about exactly how far behind us they are. As the lead dog, we are the only one without someone else’s arse in our face.

It was posted in regional papers out west. Not a whole lot. He wasnt even regarded as anything until he published a football almanac in the 60s.

Also another note about the '41 title. It wasnt even awarded to Bama in 1941. It mysteriously changed in the 60s with his almanac
