Losing Blankenship- Addition by Subtraction?

Perhaps the loss of such a great kicker will inspire more aggressive playcalling in the opponent's territory, instead of the "we know we've got at least 3 points here, so let's not do anything stupid" mindset.

Considering how atrocious our offense was, that mentality probably helped us win the majority of our games. But I do hope we become more aggressive, yes.

It's a legit point. There were times when it felt like your scenario is exactly what was happening.

It was Gary Danielson's favorite commentary when calling our games for the last two seasons.

I remember having to go for it on 4th and 7 inside the 20 vs UF when Andy Bailey was our kicker. I don't want that either.
But honestly I think KS is going to find a way to be conservative no matter what the circumstances are. It's pretty annoying.

That was injury related.
We win 3 more games in 2006 if Brandon Coutu's hammy held up.

We need another reliable FG kicker but yea, our redzone offense needs work. It's what distinguishes champions. When you get down there, you've got to have an OC who can call a winning play and of course players who can execute said play.
A prime example was the SECCG vs Bama in 2012. We were in position to score the winning TD and couldn't come up with a winning play. I feel like we would have gone on to defeat ND in the BCS championship game just like Alabama did.

It's been statistically shown (so I've read, anyway) that most coaches are too conservative about going for it on 4th down. I'd imagine that holds true when they're in field goal range too. Obviously depends on the game situation, but there are plenty of times in field goal range that I'd like to see us try.

For me, it's not so much about going for it on 4th, its about the conservatism on 1st, 2nd, 3rd because they don't want to lose yardage or turn it over. If the 3 points wasn't guaranteed anyway, the urge to not be risky is diminished. Or so I would think.

It hasn't always been that way though. Don't remember where to find the stat, but I believe we had a very good red zone touchdown percentage in 2017. In 2018 the offense was pretty good, but red zone scoring dropped off (going from memory). This year, the offense struggled to get 1st downs all over the field, so I'm not sure if we were more conservative in the red zone or just struggled everywhere.

Perhaps because Blank's reputation didn't yet precede him at the beginning of 2017 the way it did in 18 and 19. In 2017, he was still proving himself.

Maybe. Homie missed some BIG kicks too

Nobody is perfect, and he won the Groza. Talk about missing kicks, did you watch any other games this year besides Georgia? Get to see how their kickers did? Maybe you've been spoiled watching Blankenship for years. He's a master, he's the best in the country. That's not exaggeration.

Sorry, what?

Completely agree with this. Felt like we were so worried we’d turn the ball over, so we got conservative and banked on Rod to get us 3. He had so many FG attempts this year.

I propose eliminating FG and punts from football. Go for it on every play

I felt that way, too...but I may have been influenced by his commentary. but there were times it is a good move and then there are times when you need to just go for it.
For all the comments Danielson gets, I think he does a pretty good job. That's just me, though. But, I agree with your point.

I've always thought red zone touchdown percentage is a very telling stat about an offense. Georgia was 64% in that department this season, which is a horrible number. I do hope Kirby gets more aggressive there and stops settling for FGs because I think he had the exact mindset as presented in the OP.

Agreed. Maybe some clutch missed FGs by Zirkel or another PK will put tFear into him.
I think we should be going for 2PT conversion more often, too.
