Ah yes, the "let's kick Kentucky" obligatory thread.

Pretty much everyone could get in because it's a state school, but ~50% of the freshman would drop out because it was so difficult. Trial by fire.

That's how LSU was when I attended.

I don’t have a problem with open admission at all. As a state flagship and public institution, it seems reasonable to improve access to Kentucky citizens. I would be more concerned if the graduation rate was also the highest, implying they aren’t having to earn their degree. That is definitely not the case. Graduation rates are as follows:

Mississippi St 60.4%
Kentucky 60.6%
Ole Miss 61.4%
Arkansas 62.3%
Alabama 65.7%
Tennessee 69.2%
Missouri 69.5%
Auburn 71.1%
South Carolina 73%
Georgia 84.6%
Florida 87.1%
Vanderbilt 92.9%

Kentucky may not be as selective in their admissions but they are far from giving away degrees.

I hate OM as much as the next guy, but this isn’t true at all. State students tend to have more character, which matters a lot more anyway.

Acceptance rates are a dumb metric that can be brought down artificially. The states flagship university should educate the people of the state. A good way to view a university is by what their graduated have done to help society, the school’s research, what they have done to preserve the state’s history and culture... everything but an acceptance rate

Preserve the State's history and culture???

Many of these States should be trying to forget their history before 1970 and trying to elevate their State's history post 1980

I suspect state population, sports popularity, and school capacity have more to do with these numbers than anything else.

Definitely the case in Texas. Huge population, only 2 public schools that worth a damn, and a state law that mandates public universities to accept students who meet certain criteria coming out of high school.

Not everything has to be about racism, slick. Glad you think so highly of southern history. GFY

Lots of different ways to twist this. Average ACT/SAT scores among those accepted and those who apply would be a better barometer. And does your school have an honors college which ups the anti considerably?

Why do I get the feeling Ole Miss is lacking one of these honor colleges?

Every redneck with a GED applies to some of those State Universities to get a rejection letter to put on the wall. Hell, Bama use to give out Apple Cards to anyone who applied.

Not really. Those are America's two dumbest states. Of course they have to reject a lot of applicants.

#1 I never mentioned racism

#2 if the history and culture isn't positive, then trying to preserve and glorify it is unintelligent at best

Alabama is milking the OOS market so less Alabama kids actually get in. Lots of kids from the northeast from what I hear.

The State numbers are embarrassing for Ole Miss considering their enrollment is nearly identical. Lots more kids applying to State than OM.

Mizzou is a shocker. I always thought they were considered a decent school.

this is an amazingly misleading stat

acceptance rates have a lot to do with the applicants and the caliber of applicants

example; Auburn has surpassed Alabama (albeit just slightly) insofar as academic reputation (I.E. - Auburn is an academically better and more demanding school); yet the acceptance rates of the two schools does not reflect this

Why? Alabama admits more elite students (ACT of 32 or higher) than any other SEC school, save for A&M.

in the last year Bama was recruiting students on TV and radio for "off campus" degrees

It is true that acceptance rates don't tell the whole story. But where do you get the notion that Auburn has "surpassed" Alabama? According to who? USNWR had UA ranked above Auburn for most of the last fifteen years.

By what metric? Which school admits the most elite students (ACT of 32 or higher), and which one admits the engineering undergrad class with the higher avg ACT?
Alabama does.

The avg ACT of Auburn and UA are very similar. UA's avg is 26.9 as of this Fall, slightly down from a high of 27.1 two years ago, and Auburn's is 27.6. UA enrolls a higher percentage of non STEM students, which pulls down its avg ACT. Also, Auburn directs lower scoring students to AUM in their first year of college, but lets those AUM students (much much lower avg ACT) take some courses at Auburn in their first year at AUM. But in actual numbers, UA enrolls more elite students than Auburn.
