72 Dolphins and 85 Bears had more or less modern day athletes. So, no. If nothing else, guys back then were fiercely fricking tough. Let’s see today’s guy against Lawrence Taylor, Jack Youngblood or Jack Lambert. Let’s see them tackle someone like Earl Campbell. In terms of football, today’s players are pussies compared to them.

The DL for the 72 dolphins averaged 250 pounds and they had a white CB

Could you imagine them trying to stop Bama or LSU or really anyone?

The '85 Bears had one 300 lb. player, Perry. The heaviest OL was 282 lbs. '19 Alabama has twenty players at 300+ lbs.

I think the '85 Bears would get pushed around. I also the they would be at a big disadvantage schematically due to 35 years of offensive evolution.

That was an all-star college team and I am pretty sure they won at least a few times.

Average weight 85 Bears O-line: 270

Hard to get other measurables, but I bet Alabama would compare favorably in strength and especially speed. Add to that the fact that Jeudy, Tua, and HR3 are simply better than anyone the Bears had at those positions and that the schemes are more complicated today and you have a very competitive modern squad vs any team 3 decades past or older.

Toughness is a question, and so is professionalism and experience, but the difference in the quality of athlete is a decided advantage for the modern team.

I'd go modern NC team beats Superbowl teams of the early to mid 80's at least 2/5 depending on the squads. The farther back you go the higher the ratio.

Or a Deacon Jones head slap a time or twenty in a game.

They would be carrying youngsters off the field in a coma.

We did this while back and I looked up height, weight, and combine times for 2017 vs 30 years ago. You had some 250 lb. OLs that were slow as frick by today's standards. They'd get absolutely mauled by some of today's SEC DLs that are 320 lbs and quick. You can argue toughness all you want, but it won't overcome physics. A 320 lb man running 15 mph will destroy a 250 lb man running 12 mph every time. So, my guess is somewhere between 25 and 30 years.

Jack Youngblood's hand shake made my hand hurt for a month.
