Obviously no college football team today could beat any current pro team, much less a Super Bowl caliber team. But how far back do you think we would have to go to say that a modern college team probably could beat a Super Bowl team?

I think the early Super Bowl champions (Lombardi's Packers, Namath's Jets) would get the shite beat out of them by a team like Alabama. But what about the '72 Dolphins, the mid / late '70s Steelers, the '85 Bears, Montana's 49ers? How do you think the best in college football today would match up with those teams?

2019 LSU would put up at least 42 on the '85 Bears.

72 Dolphins and 85 Bears had more or less modern day athletes. So, no. If nothing else, guys back then were fiercely fricking tough. Let’s see today’s guy against Lawrence Taylor, Jack Youngblood or Jack Lambert. Let’s see them tackle someone like Earl Campbell. In terms of football, today’s players are pussies compared to them.

They used to match up a college team and the Super Bowl champs for a pre-season game every year way back in the day.

I doubt any NFL team from the before around 75 could compete with the top 4-5 teams this year.

Player height, weight, speed, nutrition, conditioning etc are so far advanced now. I doubt any of those teams would know how to defend the HUNH spread offense.

Under modern college rules they can’t hold as easily, pass interference is more strict.

Even pro caliber 225-250 DL from that era can not last against the 300 lb’ers now. They would get pushed around very easily.

Their play calling is out of date and easily recognized.

Once you get to the late 70’s on I think you have good games until the mid 80’s when the lines started getting bulkier.

It would be fun to see some accurate computer simulations that can take into account all the things I mentioned earlier.

The ol’ players are so much bigger and faster nowadays the old greats couldn’t compete myth.

It’s still college vs. pro. College teams are sloppy and the light hasn’t turned on yet for half the players.

First question:

Does the college team have to reduce their roster to 53 players or can the pro team expand to 85?
