Andy Staples, CFB writer and lover of food.....

Meatiest 25 CFB Teams - The Athletic

quote:

I’ve always been honest with my employers, and The Athletic is no different. I write about college football for two reasons.

• It’s my favorite sport.

• Writing about college football allows me to travel around the country and eat.

Basically, I’m using this job to get my own show on The Food Network. My stomach has been putting in its 10,000 hours while the rest of me has been writing about your favorite coaches and players. I know if I keep on eating, I’m going to get the call someday. And when that day comes, I’m gone on the first thing smoking. (If that thing is smoking ribs, even better.)

But until that happens, it seems like a waste to not share all I’ve learned. So today, I’m going to give you the real top 25. I voted in The Associated Press poll for five years, and I can assure you that my mouth never watered while trying to decide where to rank Iowa in relation to Mississippi State. And while those rankings certainly generated some robust discussion, I doubt they’ll be anywhere near as controversial as these …

1. Alabama
2. Texas
3. Tulane
4. Georgia
5. Wisconsin
6. LSU
7. Vanderbilt
8. Houston
9. Arizona State
10. Georgia Tech
11. Michigan State
12. Washington
13. SMU
14. Ohio State
15. USC
16. Oklahoma
17. Tennessee
18. Minnesota
19. Florida
20. Northwestern
21. ASA College-Brooklyn
22. Auburn
23. East Carolina
24. Nebraska
25. Utah

I moved from Louisiana to Georgia . I am right on the Bama line and go there all the time.

What fricking culinary genius put this list together? What cuisine in Alabama is worth even top 10?

Also, nice link. I dont have an althetic subscription.

Andy Staples is the king of college football media foodies.

It's undisputed.

21. ASA College-Brooklyn

I had no clue this even existed, and then read what he had to say.

And then saw this:
quote:

To the south in Carroll Gardens is Lucali, a more classical Neapolitan pizza spot that creates an impossibly bubbly crust with an oven that gets hotter than the fires of hell. You come before 5 p.m. and put your name on the list. Then you walk to a bar and tip one back. Eventually, they’ll call and tell you to come. Get your pizza decorated with pepperoni and fresh basil and enjoy the buzz produced by the wait.

Probably the best pizza in the city

And that I’ve ever had

The other one that he said Paulie Gees ain’t bad either

Okay i have been to both Tuscaloosa and Baton Rouge, and I really am confused about how Alabama is ranked higher (haven’t been to Athens yet.)

Also, if we are being honest with each other, Tulane could easily be number 1. Nothing beats New Orleans food and if it does I don’t believe you

The only thing special about Alabama’s cuisine scene is their use of mayonnaise in their bbq sauce. Other than that, it’s basically a copy and paste of apple bees and other chains.

Correct

I’ve had it twice
It was great both times

Better than anything I’ve ever had

I won’t question Andy’s food, but there are better pizza places in NYC especially Brooklyn than Paulie Gee’s

Atlanta is up there. I thought LSU (BR) had it good and nowhere else compared, but ATL has some good eats if you know where to go.

A lot of diners and shite that have been there for decades.

I hate to break it to you swamp baws, but not everybody loves a pot full of leftovers with roadkill sprinkled in as much as you do.

I love Atlanta, but I haven't been to Athens to know better. And Tuscaloosa does not have better food than New Orleans or Baton Rouge. He is just flat out wrong.

Andy loves barbeque, so my guess is his inherent nature leans towards that. Which would tilt your point of view.

Also, not positive, but I don't think he's included all of huge metros (Atlanta, NO). I think it's around the general area of campus. For Tech he only listed restaurants surrounding Tech in that area of Midtown - not the whole city/metro of Atlanta.

Okay so I must have missed the Tuscaloosa BBQ hype train when I went. Better than Texas? I will have to see it to believe it

Taking all southern states obesity stats, it’s safe to say there are plenty of good eats to go around, in every state.
