Wow...did the newspaper just not know or was this some sarcastic jerk, or what. This might be one of the worst headlines I have read in quite some time.

I can’t imagine the newspaper/writer did that intentionally.

Wow that’s terrible
I say that paper needs to make a nice big fat donation to that foundation

Was it intentional? Who knows but the media as a whole is dumb as hell so who knows

I’m going with this. Yeah it looks bad but to hear some of the people around here tell the story, the guy should be hung at high noon. I think people are just way too sensitive these days. Again, it looks bad....but beyond apologizing I don’t know what else needs to happen.

I doubt it. A lot of this work is farmed out to non-local journalists who simply aren't aware of certain things like the Hilinski Hope Foundation. It isn't an excuse. It is more of a statement on the sad state of "local" newspapers.

Nothing. They fricked up, owned it, and apologized for it. I don't think it was intentional, just clueless and a demonstration of how little journalists actually understand about the subject they're writing about.
I mean anyone who even did a cursory check on Hilinski's background would know not to run that headline.

Of course Dan Wolken immediately came to the newspapers rescue.

I doubt it was intentional. It is just what happens when I profession like journalism turns to shite like it has recently. There really is not work done and no real knowledge about their craft. It is just a way to get more clicks/likes/responses. The entire profession has gone to shite and does a shite job

Agreed. If we’re going to get outraged every time so journalist uses poor word choice we’ll be in for stressful lives. That paper had a sports reporter for years and years whose only job seemed to be to troll SC football. It got so bad that Spurrier had to ban him from press conferences. I think that says a lot more about the paper than one guy making a sh!tty headline.

I don't think it was intentional, just trying to make a play on words and used a poor choice of words. I think this was more in reference to the fact that Scar fans had a lot of hope for the remainder of the season and Hilinksi after the Bama game

And I think that is like 50% of the outrage with this story. This newspaper has a history of crapping on South Carolina football. That was still a top Spurrier moment when he refused to do that press conference with Ron Morris in the press pool.

As a former broadcast and print media sports journalist (emphasis on former), it is a horrible business. Broadcasters are given time limits (usually plus or minus 30 seconds), print media have a certain number of inches to fill. If your story is too short or too long you have to make the corrections in a matter of minutes.
Writers usually have no input on headlines. I actually had a 3 hour class in college on headline writing.
According to the newspaper the headline writer was in North Carolina and probably had no idea of the reckless headline.
Long story short, it is a horrible business and I am glad I left it and moved on to a better profession.
Low pay, long hours and I am sure the writer feels horrible and he had nothing to do with it.

I agree with you 100%. It’s sad that the reporter doesn’t take time to be aware of the kids foundation. Its not like he’s some guy off the streets. He is kind of a big man on campus right now. Sorry reporting.

If I were the University, I would strip that paper's press credentials for at least the remainder of the year.
