The truth… Really good news coming out of practice and Auburn game in regard to injuries. All players are back full speed other than Waddle, Sanders, and Quick. The Auburn game was not as physical from their side as in the past.

The team is really loose and focused on LSU. Saban will not allow them to look past them. Lots of zoom meetings. Players have even more time to prepare with classes all online the rest of semester.

The Sark offense is really clicking. Mac is really making reads quick and destroying scout team. C Harris stands out more and more and becoming the leader on defense. What a difference a year makes. Secondary improving every game and practice.

In many peoples opinion this is Saban’s best coaching staff ever from top to bottom. I agree!! As predicted, we have some issues with covid, but under control so far. We'll be without some coaches this week but should have Saban back and both coordinators are good. We don't have any starters out.

It's going to be a weird atmosphere in BR on Saturday. Even with severely reduced capacity, there are still plenty of tickets available:

After a decade as one of the most expensive tickets in college football, LSU still has plenty of seats available for LSU Bama this weekend, even under highly reduced capacity.

The secondary market has cratered into the high $60s

Not that anyone would want to go anyway

Sounds like LSU will have Mo Hampton (S) and Tory Carter (FB/TE) back on Saturday.

Roman Harper was on wjox yesterday and he was asked about the defensive improvement. Harper said he thought it was because they are playing a lot more zone defense, and you have to give Saban and the coaches credit for being willing to change from man to man. Most of those coaches believe in the man to man, and they dont want to change. Harper said a lot of the time it might look like Ala is in a man defense, but they are not. You see an Ala defender following an offensive player that is in motion, and you think that looks like a man to man defense, but its not. Its sort of a match up zone. Harper said sometimes on third down they will go to a man to man and play more aggressive.

My question is, has that simplified the play calling?

Good coaching is getting your kids to adapt to what you want to do, great coaching is adapting your style of play to what your team can do and get the absolute most out of them.

Coach Golding and coach Saban can call it what they want. The videos don't lie. Our guys are looking forward now and don't have their back turned near as much as the ball is coming down the field. Land or air, they are a step ahead, not behind. That's everything.

I would be happy to give Golding the credit for it in that he has promised "simplifying" the defense for 2 preseasons now. And he is the DC. What our coaches are willing to verbally concede about necessary changes, well, that's another thread in itself. I personally don't care if it ever gets confessed. The only thing I want to see about my team's defense, I'm now watching on my 4K.

I saw Harper explaining and illustrating that with some video clips on the SEC Network. When zone coverage is played well by good DBs (along with proper LB drops), it's more difficult (overall) for pass-happy spread offenses to exploit than man coverage is. Also, picks are much more likely with well-played zone coverage.

Have to believe that Chi is making that zone a tougher nut to crack

I think it’s simplified the assignment. Good OCs knew how to exploit the pattern match coverage because it’s easy to bust. A nickel back can have 5 or 6 different potential responsibilities on the “pattern match” coverages. It’s not as simple as “cover the guy in this area” but it’s a lot simpler than “I’ve got the X if he does this, the Y if he does this, and the H if he does this. I need to cover the X until he gets to here and then switch over to the H if I read this key.”

There was just a whole lot of thinking going on. It’s tougher to exploit the former when everyone knows it well. The latter let’s your athletes be athletes and just play football without paralysis by analysis

Like any zone there will be exploitable windows, but that’s where film study and recognition comes into play. Battle pick 6 being a good example. That was a completion early in the game and an easy pick 6 later

Yup. Malachi on the reverse is another example of play recognition and sound area assignment play
