2019 SEC QB Rankings : Jim Johnson, Southern Pigskin

Long description of the OAYP formula per Johnson

Interesting look at returners at various positions. Not sure how great a metric it is, but it's at least a more specific way to look at returning starters and units.

quote:

The basic premise is to cross the efficiency measure of the former, but across all positions, with the value principles of the latter -- hopefully as a way of more accurately depicting a given team’s returning production. Returning good players is more valuable than returning only average or subpar players, and not all production is created equal, so this should ideally prove to be more predictive than simply looking at the raw number of returning starters or the percentages of returning production.

1. Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama) (3.15)
2. Jake Fromm (Georgia) (1.90)
3. Nick Starkel (TAMU 2017) (Arkansas) (0.52)
4. Feleipe Franks (Florida) (-0.14)
5. Jake Bentley (South Carolina) (-0.32)
6. Joe Burrow (LSU) (-0.40)
7. Kellen Mond (TAMU) (-0.57)
8. Jarrett Guarantano (VOLS) (-0.59)
9. Terry Wilson (Kentucky) (-0.72)
10. Keytaon Thompson (2017) (MSU) (-0.81)
11. Ben Hicks (SMU) (Arkansas) (-0.97)
12. Kelly Bryant (Clemson 2017) (Missouri) (-1.05)
13. Riley Neal (Ball State) (Vanderbilt) (-1.20)

*Published before Stevens transferred to MSU

quote:

I’ll preface this by stating that the marginal OAYP scores for the SEC quarterbacks are skewed by having two of probably the five best quarterbacks in the entire country at the top. As a result, the other qualifying signal callers’ marginal scores are almost entirely negative. I can all but guarantee that when we look at their marginal ratings against all qualifying returnees at QB that the numbers will go up across the board.

In the meantime, though, there is still value in evaluating quarterbacks against their SEC counterparts, only within the context of the league, given that it is those players against whom they will primarily be competing.

You won’t be surprised at the top, but after that, it gets interesting. We’ll tier them out into ‘superstars’ (marginal OAYP >1), ‘average to above average’ (in the 50th percentile or better), ‘not as good as we thought?’, and potential breakout stars (players that didn’t get enough reps to qualify, but posted high OAYP scores on a smaller sample size).

I think y'all might be surprised with Riley Neal.

He'll have some talent around him.

I’m surprised that both aren’t ranked higher to be honest

Mond did surprisingly well in the first year of a new system - interesting to see his improvement this year. Same goes for Burrow

And Bentley is STILL here? I swear that dude has been at SC forever

I still like Burrow as a sleeper heisman candidate, if LSU wins 11 he’ll be in New York

Maybe worth adding to the OP... not sure why he doesn't go ahead and define the abbreviation precisely in this 2019 article, but it was in the 2018 ranking article:

OAYP -- Opponent adjusted combined net yards per play and points per game

Essentially a modification to the author's original "YP" score, which was just an aggregated yards/play and points/play scoring metric.

Good find - I'm also still not entirely sure how he specifically gives individual scores to players who don't aggregate stats (offensive linemen, specifically). I scoured the article but couldn't find it.

Starkel won't even start so get that dude off the list. I don't care what formula you're using...if it puts Starkel in the top 3 then it's a shite formula.

I'd Have Mond at 3, Franks at 4 and Burrow at 5.

Like I have said many times, college stats are comparing apples to oranges. The teams do not play the same competition, even in the own league.

Yea we know, thanks for your input.

This is more fun to discuss than whether LSU is gayer than Texas A&M or how much Texas is going to snuggle with LSU, IMHO.

Wouldn't be surprised if he's starting by midseason. Hicks knows the offense much better but Starkel is much more talented.

Starkel was 20th nationally in 2017 in passer rating and averaged 8.7 YPA.

I'd be shocked if he isn't the starter at Arkansas by mid-season once he fully catches up on the offense. He's absolutely a better quarterback than the kid from SMU.

Starkel is legit. I think he has a chance to be the best QB in Arkansas history.

Isn't this conclusive proof that the list is shite?

Joe Burrow could end up being a top 3 QB.
We’re going to be dangerous this year.
