Do you consider a grad of a system school as a sidewalk fan or a true fan?
Let's say you graduate from University of Arkansas at Little Rock or Tennessee at Chattanooga or Alabama at Birmingham. Is it sidewalk for them to support their flagship system Arkansas, Tennessee, or Alabama???

"true fan" is the dumbest thing ever, where you went doesn't make you a "true" fan or a fake one. Sidewalk simply refers to if you went there or not.

Well by definition yes, those would be "sidewalk" people because they did not go to the actual school. That doesn't mean they can't be a "true" fan though.

I consider a sidewalk fan someone who has no ties at all to the school.

No, to be a true fan you have to be exactly like me. A graduate of the university in the year I graduated with the exact same amount of support as me and interests as me.

If you have to sit and come up with ways that you feel like make you or someone else a “true” fan then that sounds gay.

I was having a debate with a UAB grad who said he was more of a true fan of Alabama than I was(a MSU grad). I disagreed!

Does anyone really care? Only so called Alumni of chitty programs really bring this up every summer. A lot of universities are supported by people who didn't graduate from that particular university. Probably 30% of the Sec Rant maybe graduated from the university they root if that.

It's not the face you put on, friend, it is how you truly feel; deep down. I do zero things, year round, to support the UGA football program. But when the team loses? It feel like I was punch in the appendix for an hour or so. That was more so when I was younger, and I've learned to suck it up. Richt help me learn that last trick.

Why do you give a frick what somebody thinks? Be a man dammit!
Especially not a dirty, rotten, good for nothing, pathetic, pig fricking, UAB graduate of all things.

Neither one of you are more or less a fan of your particular teams based on if you went there or not.
Now, I do think that an alum has the POTENTIAL for a more deep seeded and unique experience than a non-alum. Things like walking the grounds to class, enjoying the sights on a warm spring day, taking in all the campus and university has to offer on a daily basis, etc are things that a non-alum simply isn't going to have. I think that nostalgia and experience is a wonderful thing. But if you're simply talking abotu "who is the bigger football fan" then yeah..where you went is irrelevant.

If one is simple enough to get emotionally invested in games played by 17-22 year olds then it doesn't matter where one went to school. They're still simple.
Even worse if they draw an identity from those athletic events.
It's mindless,meaningless recreation. Nothing more.

A fan is a fan imo. Side walkers tend to be more over the top.

I don't think there is necessarily any way to pigeon hole all fans into any particular categories. I know some alums who could care less about sports and some big boosters who never even applied to go to the school. Being a fan is whatever you make of it.
P.S. And it can be a very fun hobby.
