I don't know that Cecil's problem was a "lack of killer instinct"
Maybe too much killer instinct, but he always got caught at the B&E part of the play

pretty crazy too because he's been a pretty solid RB in the NFL. Of course he was just cut by the Jets, but I expect for him to get picked up by another team.

Crowell was also a dumbass. Getting caught with a gun with the serial number filed off is not a good idea.

Jaryl Brazil was highly-touted. Some assumed he would be a worthy successor to the Badger. Turns out there was too much thug in him.
Travonte Valentine fits the bill also but legend goes on the rant he was most likely a made-up recruit.

Nick Brassell. Probably was actually better than Donte Moncrief, but couldn’t keep his shite together and didn’t wanna play school

Linnie Patrick
Coach Bryant: "He's the most talented runner, at times, I've ever been around."

A recent one for Bama would be Tony Brown. He had absolute elite talent, speed, agility and had almost perfect size for his position.
He just never was able to put it together. It was mental for him, a lack of it, to be honest.

Mark Farmer.
Wimp Sanderson's first recruit as HC at Bama. Mark was the unsung hero of Bama's defeat of #1 ranked UCLA at Pauley Pavilion on 01/28/1983, the day the school buried Coach Bryant. Completely shut down UCLA's 7'Center-Stuart Gray. Following is from link below.
“Mark Farmer never started,” Sanderson said. “I think about it now, and I can hardly believe I took Mark Farmer out there and started him against UCLA. A funny thing about it, though, was I told him that he ought to be excited because both TV sets in Arab would be on. We got a good laugh out of that.”
That was Mark's first of 11 starts in his Bama career. Bama was 11-0 in those starts. If he had the killer instinct you speak of, he would have started most, if not all, of his Bama games. He did play some in Europe after Bama, but never made it to the NBA.
The Night Bama Shocked UCLA
In wake of “Bear” Bryant’s death, Bama hoops toppled the No. 1 Bruins

Edit: Bittersweet to write that. Mark Farmer is my Son-in-Law
