First of all, this Hogs basketball team has already played in 10 games this season decided by two possessions or less. So far this season they are 4-6 in these games.

But historically, Mike Anderson is better than both Eddie Sutton or Nolan Richardson in 1 point games. He wins 73% of those games. Sutton won 65% and Nolan won even fewer.

This to me speaks volumes about Anderson's effectiveness as an in game coach. He plays in a lot of close games, and wins them at a very high clip.

They're down this season in this category, but they're also the youngest team in the country.

Anyways, figured people may like the proper context for all of this "Mike Anderson can't coach" nonsense.

This tells me that Nolan Richardson won a lot of games by completely blowing the other team out.

hogstats.com does some really good research and tweeted this out the other day:

True road wins by @RazorbackMBB against AP-ranked teams, by coach:

Richardson - 5
Anderson - 3
Heath - 3
Pelphrey - 2
Sutton - 1

Sutton boosted his record by playing garbage teams.

Eddie Sutton also went 10-9 in the NCAA tournament including a final four and finished in the AP Final poll seven times.

easy to do when you get a good draw from a fluffed up resume.

The people who think Sutton is good as or better than Nolan (they exist) need to wake up.

It's time for Nolan to get the respect he deserves. Nolan Richardson court and a statue in the South Entrance/by the stairs.

There is no reason for Tommy Boyer (no matter the money he donates) to have a statue there and for Nolan not to be recognized.

I never once compared Sutton to Nolan however you continue to shite on Sutton who accomplished far more than what Anderson has done.

Two hall of fame coaches

What a douchebag.

That has nothing to do with it. I am just putting to rest another tired arse, busted narrative y'all like to throw around about Mike Anderson not being a good in game coach. The numbers show that to be completely false. Just like y'all used to run around here saying he can't win on the road. Until that narrative got busted. Then y'all just switched to another faulty premise. Which I'm putting to rest with this thread.

It isn't about criticizing a coach or defending a coach. It's about doing one or the other honestly.

Nolan and Eddie probably won more games period. Meaning there weren't as many close games period.

Against more stellar opponents … Since we are talking out of our arse and such

Has little to do with winning percentage in close games when you assume that they've all probably had over 30

Both were great coaches in their era. Sutton was a master of the four corner game, where a team might attempt to hold the ball for the final 10 minutes of the game.

Nolan brought his game to Arkansas at precisely the right time. The 3-pt shot and shot clock had both just been introduced and many coaches were hesitant to let their teams play full court ball. Nolan also emphasized tough defense, so his system was well-rounded. As other coaches began adopting similar systems, Nolan began losing his advantage during the 90's.

This is just a guess, but I don't think teams played other high profile teams as much during the Sutton era, so if Sutton scheduled more cupcakes, then that's probably why. But Sutton's teams often played in tournaments with other good teams, so they didn't shy away.

Btw, one of the best close wins I've witnessed was when Sutton's Arkansas team beat either Wake Forest, or Clemson, in the early 80's. As I recall, Darrell Walker stepped to the line with a couple of seconds left and Arkansas down by 1 point. He hits the first one to tie the game, and on his second attempt, he intentionally ricochets the ball off the rim to Alvin Robertson, who catches the ball in mid-air and puts it back in for the win. I wish there were video of this play somewhere, because it's one of my favorites, and I doubt many at the time realized that it was a set play.

I'm surprised that had to be explained to anyone.

Our mascot got to carry out the #1 flag everyweek before the game because we were the #1 team in the nation everyweek.

I'd rather judge our basketball coaches by NCAA Elite 8 or better finishes.

Don't really care much about conference standings...just NCAA.
