What happened to A&M basketball

Not trolling, I have no problem with A&M. I don't follow A&M basketball that closely but I remember very recently they were a very very solid team, but they have just fallen off of the cliff. Was there a coaching change or mass attrition of talent that led to this?
Edit: I know that UGA sucks too. We are absolutely awful, but our fall was from a sustained level of pitiful mediocrity to total garbageness primarily due to the loss of JJ Frazier and Yante Maten.

You're not going back far enough.
From 2006-2011, A&M averaged 25 wins a year and the 2nd round of the tournament.
Billy Kennedy came on board and didn't make the dance until year 5 with the best recruiting class in school history. That class only made the tournament twice in 3 years and is all gone.
You're seeing the real Kennedy this season, not the mirage of 2015-2018.
Here's a comparison Georgia will appreciate: Kennedy will likely tie Mark Fox' loss numbers from his time at Georgia (9 seasons) this year (year 8).

Historically we’ve never been good at hoops.
Gillispie turned us around, and the students went nuts in their support of him and the team.
Since then, we’ve continued our mediocrity.
I wish we were better,, but we aren’t.
It’s going to take getting a trailblazer as a coach to make things happen.
In th3 meantime, we just don’t have the following.
It’s all about wins.

Not a jumper, just headed to a place that was much more optimal.
I’m sure you understand that.

They don’t have time for basketball. Their sole purpose in this conference is to slob all over bamas knob!

I seem to remember aTm usually being decent in hoops. Not a bigtime program but respectable. I guess most programs that are not a usual top 10 type eventually hits bottom. Miss State has seen the bottom pretty much the last 7 or 8 years. That was painful to watch.

Billy Kennedy happened to Texas A&M. The last few years A&M has been pretty good only because of the staff Kennedy had brought in to help coach and recruit. Now that the kids Stansbury (gone for the last few years) got to come to A&M and the kids that Avery Johnson (son was at A&M before he transferred to Alabama to be with his dad) helped bring in, Kennedys lack of coaching and recruiting ability has wrecked the basketball program.

This is a legitimate thread. Before it I was wondering why Texas A&M fell off too. They were really really good the last few years. I appreciate the ones who gave insight.

I suppose I'm capable of that.

I wish I could agree with you, but it wasn’t the norm.
We’d like to be a powerhouse in hoops, but we simply aren’t.
It’s going to take a big time coach—and I’m not sure we’ll be able to attract such a commodity—to get us over our mediocrity hoop.
Time will tell.

Kennedy - dude sucks at recruiting, and lost the assistants that could. Hopefully his tired arse is fired this year

Rick Stansbury left
And we had a chance to hire a great coach but got Rick Ray. Ray was a great guy but in over his head and had a mess to clean up, too. Then Howland came into an equally bad if not worse situation. Never thought I’d miss Stansbury so much. Anyway, we will see how things shake out.

To keep the Moral Majority placated, I would like to say Billy Kennedy is a very nice, moral, family man and is to be congratulated for fighting health issues from almost the start of his tenure at A&M.
Now, the rest of the story. He does not have the ability to coach, recruit and lead a major conference basketball team. He has not been fired because of several reasons. 1. The big money Ag's don't give a flip about basketball. So there is not money available to buy him out. 2. It would be a PR nightmare to fire a coach who is fighting a horrible medical malady. The man for the job now coaches at Ranger JC, in the boondocks of North Central Texas. He is presently 15-2. His name is Billy Gillispie. He has matured, sobered up and doing the best coaching of his career right now. His old lifestyle even caused him to have a kidney transplant. I know Kentucky does not care for him but he and Kentucky should not have ever gotten together. His style is not Kentucky's and Kentucky's style is certainly not Billy Gillespie. When Kennedy's contract is over (next year?), it will not be renewed and if the powers that be rehired Gillespie, basketball would be the hottest ticket on campus again.
