Difference Between Kirby and Richt Exhibit 1: Trevor Lawrence & Deshaun Watson

Why Didn't UGA Get Trevor Lawrence
Apparently Fields was Smart's second choice, but he couldn't get his first (Lawrence) because Richt's staff didn't love him and didn't aggressively pursue him. Smart comes in and immediately calls Lawrence trying to correct this huge error, but the dye was cast and Clemson already had the momentum.
Now they did get the 3rd highest rated QB in recruiting history and Chaney screwed it up. Because of that we can't exactly know what would have happened if TL had come home, but this is a clear example of why Kirby > Richt.
Combine that with Richt's staff not believing Deshaun Watson was good enough to play at UGA and that's enough to give a UGA fan grey hairs.

3 of the best QB's to come out of UGA in the past. . .well, ever and Richt doesn't even pursue. Sh*t gives me an ulcer.

But we got Brice Ramsey bro

Worst part: I really think Fields will become a star next year. People have short memories, but that OSU staff can develop talent and he has it in spades.
That's my concern with the Coley hire. We need a QB coach on staff who is a difference maker.

Are Georgia fans really blaming Chaney, not Kirby, for Fields leaving lmfao?
If it were up to Chaney, Fields wouldn’t have played at all, you think he was the one promising him game time his freshman year?

Richt would always get one or 2 big names, just enough to get headlines and spur hope
Kirby has been an amazing upgrade, at least as far as recruiting is concerned
on the field results have been about the same (yes, I know, playoffs, but Richt would also have been in with a 4 team system and may have won, at least with Donnan's players)

Fields left because of the lack of real QB reps. Kirby has some culpability, but that's on Chaney.

Richt had one of the best opening 3 seasons ever. Kirby replicating that is a great thing.

He was nowhere near as good of a passer as Fromm was, and under normal circumstances would be expected to ride the bench and come hand it off in mop up duty like every other Freshman backup QB.
Kirby promising Fields the world to sign with Georgia doesn’t make it Chaney’s fault for not risking it with the obviously inferior QB.

Good point. Both were ahead of schedule. The only coach I can think of that has similar immediate results is Lincoln Riley (OU is his first HC gig right?) and Gus Malzahn.

The delusion of UGA fans is kind of depressing.
Fields doesn't fit Kirby's offense, Kirby clearly took him just because he was a very highly rated QB. He had two scholarship Quarterbacks last year, meaning that Fields would likely have no way to do risky things (run, deep drop back) because if he were injured, Fromm is the last guy with a QB scholarship.
So he effectively recruited a guy that he couldn't even use in the right way due to roster mismanagement at the position.

So you actually think Kirby took one of the best QB prospects only because he wanted him to hold a clip board and be padding behind Fromm? Based on his one year as a freshman?
And we’re the delusional ones...

This is one of the dumbest takes I have ever seen.

The narrative that a coach “promises a starting position” is a joke. A coaches livelihood depends on winning games, hence playing the best player to put the TEAM in a position to win. Fields couldn’t tip the scale and beat Fromm out. Football is pretty easy to get...just beat the guy in front of you and you will play.

OMG. OK. Check this out.
Jake From first 44 Passes: 26/44 59% 2TD 1INT || Rusing (whole season): 55 for 79 yrds 3TD
Justin Fields only 39 passes: 27/37 69% 4TD 0INt || Rushing: 42 for 266 4TD
Trevor Lawrence first 43 passes: 26/43 60% 5TD 1INT || Rusing: 60 for 184 Yrds 1 TD
This isn't about how good he was to start. This is about maximizing the kids potential so he can get the reps to earn the position. He was much better at every single thing you do on the football field than From at the start of their careers. There's no reason to believe he wouldn't have developed faster than Fromm given the opportunity. UGA never gave him that chance to develop into someone who could earn the starting spot so he's gone.
