These numbers are misleading, before 2010 all title games were played on networks... now they’re all on cable.

Yes, that's true. However, Ohio State vs. Oregon in 2014 was on cable and is the second highest rated NC Game since 1998..... so it shows that being on cable doesn't necessarily hinder it from hitting a huge rating.

It also proves my point. The one game involving two teams NOT from the SEC is by far the highest rated National Title Game ever on cable.

I think the bigger point is matchups that bring in more diverse regions of the country do better nationally... Oregon brings in the pacific NW audience who wouldn’t otherwise care about cfb.

People in the southeast and ohio are gonna watch regardless.

South will watch no matter what. Ohio State and Oregon meant entire midwest and large part of the west coast was also watching.

It also got a major boost from being the first ever playoff title game.

Oregon is not a ratings bonanza. And the Midwest generally watches title games no matter what. Though I'm sure Ohio St was able to pull in a lot more casual fans in Michigan, Indiana, PA...etc, than a SE team would.
