Tosh Lupoi Coaching Dilemma

If Saban was to demote him, who would you hire? There are not many good DC'S out, who are elite recruiters as well as great schematically. If we did find a guy who was the complete package he would for sure be a HC the following year. Tosh Lupoi is without question the worst defensive coordinator we've had. Our linebacker play has went down tremendously under him, numerous busted assignments in the secondary and his blitz packages are extremely puzzling and untimely.

Offer Venables $4,000,000 a year to be our DC
Honestly, I would just let Golding take over. I think he would be better calling plays and I think our LBs would be better under Lupoi

Pete golding. He ran a good defense at UT San Antonio and honestly, i believe that's really why he was hired.

Nick is in a tuff spot with Tosh since Tosh is perhaps our best recruiter. If Nick drops him back then Kirby will come for him ASAP. If you stick with him then perhaps you're hurting the defense. The ILB play is a disaster and that belongs to Golding I believe. The coaches convention is taking place this week so silly season might get started by Thursday or Friday. Expect the unexpected.

I would hire the best X's and O's defensive coordinator available. There are plenty of recruiters on the staff, but someone needs to be able to coach up the defense

He won't have to worry about that when he announces his retirement this Friday afternoon.

I don't think our ILB play is so much a coaching problem than it is just a personnel problem. Wilson just isn't on par with Evans, Foster, McClain, Hightower, etc. And Moses is still pretty green, though I'm not sold he's on their level either. We've been pretty spoiled at that position over the years.

I think you're right about Wilson, but I would think by the end of year 2 if Moses is still green then that is on the coaches.

Tosh or Nick?
Well, Tosh is a little too young to retire.

Why don't we offer Bob Shoop at MSST. He has been great for the Bulldogs this year. He is as aggressive as Venables and his defense was near the top in all statistical categories. Keep Tosh for Co-Defensive Coordinator. Golding needs to be gone. There was a considerable amount of decline this year. We have too much talent to be getting the linebacker play we got this year.

We've been spoiled for sure. But you expect to continue to be spoiled when you pull replacements from 5 stars that everybody else wanted too.
I hope we work somewhat on tackling for next year. It seems sometimes when we need to get off the field on 3rd down, we focus on stripping the ball too much, rather than just stopping the runner short of the 1st down marker.
Clemson did a good job last night of "wrapping up". We're not that good at it. One of CU's smaller backs drug Savion five yards laterally and five yards forward inside the 10 on one of their scoring drives.

To do what? Recruit 5 stars at Georgia but end up with an anemic defense like he has done at Alabama?
Let Kirby have him. That’s not a hard decision.

This was Tosh's first season as a DC, the first season at Bama for the rest of the defensive staff and 9 new starters on defense. It's silly to blame everything on Tosh and throw him under the bus. All of the defensive issues are fixable.

My theory...Saban intentionally went young to have some consistency for a couple of years. People that werent going to be HCs in a one/done scenario. May require some OJT as the sacrifice for some continuity. The only thing that i question, after some time to cool off, is previously about LSU we'd see a play or two by a frosh sub then more time in Nov so that come post season a Anoma or Kaho being productive. LaBryan Ray looked to be the next stud in his limited mins. Late in his frosh yr. Did any of that occur this yr? And i missed it. Seems like Bama had the same players unless an injury occurred. (This could be on the players effort as well)

Hire Gene Chizik. I really DGAF regardless. Until we hire someone that will stick around for more than a calendar year the defense will struggle every year..
