Death of College Athletics

Not for the money makers.... but the money makers are a very small part of overall college athletics.
Back in the old days, you didn't have TV at all, and certainly no internet. If there was an athletic event at your school, be it volleyball or football or basketball, it was a campus event that people came out for. Because there's nothing else better to do.
Then TV's came along, through the 70's and 80's and were in dorm rooms and apartments, but you only had 4 channels. Not like what TV is today. TV was more of a novelty luxury item.
Athletics provided entertainment. Socialization at an event.
Today, most colleges are struggling to keep athletics, and scholarships. Out of tradition, they fight and scrimp and claw to keep their athletic programs. Nostalgia.
There are 128 FBS teams.
Only about 50 of them are profitable. .
The rest are just funding a Norman Rockwell painting in their minds.
Students at the majority of colleges don't give a damn about sports. In fact, many of them resent the drain on the college.
The old guard doesn't want to recognize this, but it is true.
The old traditions will still continue at the big football schools, the ones still raking in money.
But the schools that used to rake in money, but aren't now, never will again.
And eventually, we'll all be dead.

Whatever, there are over 700 programs that offer football.
FBS is a small (but dominant) part of overall football participation and game action.
It is played at places that could care less by athletes that care a lot. If I still could, I would play football in front of a crowd of ZERO.

That's the problem, you just don't see it.
50 years ago, having athletic scholarships was a positive thing for a college.
Today, students aren't starved for entertainment.
Today, colleges are BEGGING people to show up at their athletic events.
Today, small schools are LINING UP to get their shite packed by a big school so they can get $600,000.
The entire foundation for the purpose of college athletics is dead but for the top handful of schools that actually turn a profit in the big sports.
College athletics, from what it was, to what it became, to what it is today, to what it will be tomorrow, is dead for the vast majority of colleges.

One fake punt for Georgia; death of college athletics for Georgia fans.

I expect more from KY fans. You are better than this.

I don't disagree. College football is now about the 40 or so programs that move the needle. However, there will be football played, the feasting between divisions will diminish, and football will go on.
Look back a few decades at an Alabama football schedule. It didn't include feastlings and it won't in the future as the top tier evolves. This will also be good for the lower divisions as they settle at reduced importance.

This post is a classic example of why you should never mix bourbon and the black bile of utter despair.

They could save money by going back to paying football coaches only 100k/year.

I don't drink liquor.
You are generally a good poster.
You are better than this.
The reason upvotes and downvotes exist is so you can cast your opinion on a post without having to type something out that exposes you as a moron.
What I'm saying is you could have just downvoted and moved on. The fact you felt a need to reply with something so banal is concerning to me. You really are better than this.

This is one hell of a melt. And all the aftermelts too.

I was just making a joke spurred by that "eventually we'll all be dead" line at the end. It just struck me as an incongruously dolorous addition to a post about declining revenues and attendance. I assumed you were just trying to inject a little humor yourself. My comment wasn't commentary on the gist of what you said.
And I don't downvote people for saying what's on their mind. Or for most other reasons, for that matter, except injecting politics into sports discussion. If I have a reason or motivation to disagree, I'll just post my reasons for disagreeing.

You assumed correctly.

^^This. And even 100k is too much for what amounts to a glorified PE teacher. It's ridiculous what smaller D1 schools are paying coaches given the output.
