So if anyone gets hurt during one of these field storming they (the conference) can legally claim they not only don't support the activity but actually penalize that behavior.

What's not to get? It can be a safety and security risk. SEC wants to deter it. They think monetary fines will deter it.

I was wondering why a school would get fined for their fans storming their own field but your explanation makes sense.

Players and coaches of the other team are trying to get off the field. They're pissed off and just trying to get to the locker room. They don't need a bunch of drunk people giving them shite. That's how problems happen.

There will be some lawsuits eventually if there have not been yet. You can't let college kids take over an arena without some serious risk.
