1) Nick Saban, Alabama 8.3 million
2) Urban Meyer, Ohio State 7.6 million
3) Jim Harbaugh, Michigan 7.5 million
4) Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M 7.5 million
5) Gus Malzahn, Auburn 6.7 million
6) Kirby Smart, Georgia 6.6 million
7) Dabo Swinney, Clemson 6.2 million
8) Dan Mullen, Florida 6.0 million
9) Tom Herman, Texas 5.5 million
10) Scott Frost, Nebraska 5.0 million
Has anyone ever thought about paying coaches a base salary to actually "do" a job, and then paying them extra money for millions of dollars to complete a job during the course of a season?
Why guarantee these guys anything that big until they actually achieve something?

Because SEC schools are football factories with academics attached.

Because they prefer guaranteed money.

That isn't how you attract talented people to your organization.

I have a solution:
Maybe $1M base salary PLUS
$500K per conference win or OOC P5 win
$300K per non-P5 FBS win
$100K per FCS win
$1M for conference title
$1M for playoff win
$1.5M for BCSNC
Pay for performance. A school could be out as much as $9.5M, but for a national title, it'd be worth it.

Joe Alleva is making out like a bandit

Why pre-determine money when so many things are unpredictable and out of your control?
A comfortable contract of about 2 million would more than suffice a "job" in this field.
That is more than generous.
Make them "earn" the rest.

You have a problem with the free market, comrade?

And he tried to take Vince Marrow, Harbaugh is an expensive turd in khakis

I understand attracting talented "people", but those people are eventually going to have to either do it, or not.
Short contracts would be perfect for that. 2 or 3 years max at 2 million per year is respectable.
These huge "buyouts", however, don't make a whole lot of sense.
The only reason you are "buying out" anyone is because things didn't work out for your football program.
That usually means that you over-paid for a coach that you now want to be rid of...but he gets about 10 million for "his" trouble.
Make them earn it. And stop throwing money into a future that you can not predict.
Not only money... but millions upon millions of money.
Make them earn it.

Ed O has beaten two of them.
Soon to be 4.

The fans dictate the contracts and buyouts. Fanbases are moronic and blow in the wind.
No way I am going in without some deterrence to not fire me because of a bad year or two.

Well, only one of them has coached in a Super Bowl, too.

That sounds nice, but welcome to the real world. In the real world, coaches that are in high demand get to dictate the terms, not the schools who are all competing for them.

Wut? Have you ever read one of those contracts.

That super bowl appearance hasn't borne much thus far
Overrated until he proves otherwise
