Auburn is reassessing its starting five along the offensive line following its 22-21 loss to LSU on Saturday.

quote:

Auburn has started the same five-man unit along the line in each of its three games this year, but after an uneven performance against LSU, offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey hinted that some changes could be on the horizon.

"We're still evaluating all that," Lindsey said. "We'll see how the week plays out. We've definitely got some things on our mind, hopefully, maybe that can generate some momentum. At the same time, we've got to play better as a unit. But we'll always look at a way to improve. See how it plays out this week."

quote:

Through three games, Auburn has maintained a starting offensive line featuring left tackle Prince Tega Wanogho Jr., left guard Marquel Harrell, center Kaleb Kim, right guard Mike Horton and right tackle Jack Driscoll.

quote:

That group has had its share of struggles early in the season, despite minimizing negative plays (11 allowed, which is tied for 17th-fewest nationally). Specifically, Auburn has had a tough time finding consistency in the run game, rushing for fewer than 150 yards in two of the team's three games this season.

quote:

Against LSU, Auburn finished with just 130 rush yards, which was the 11th-lowest total of the Gus Malzahn era. Wanogho said the line let its "guard down" and didn't play with the same level of energy late in the game, which resulted in the offense fading down the stretch after building a two-score lead in the second half.

quote:

Everyone just relaxed," Wanogho said. "When you're playing a good football team, you can't do that. That's on us. At the end of the day, that's on us."

quote:

Redshirt freshman Nick Brahms has been pushing Kim since returning from a broken leg he sustained in the spring, and Lindsey said the coaching staff told Brahms to be prepared should his number be called in a pinch.

quote:

At guard, Lindsey said there are a "couple possibilities" that gives the team some "flexibility" along the line, including redshirt freshman Austin Troxell, who spent the offseason competing for the starting right tackle job. The Tigers could also move Kim over to guard should he be supplanted by Brahms at center.

quote:

While Lindsey didn't say changes to the line were imminent, the second-year offensive coordinator did not rule anything out heading into Saturday's game against Arkansas (6:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network).

"I think you always have to look for ways to improve your team," Lindsey said. "If a guy at any position, whether it's quarterback or offensive line, is not getting it done, you have to do something to ignite your team and to ignite your offense. Listen, at the end of the day we got off to a slow start because we didn't execute well. We dropped some balls early, we didn't block right early, we missed a throw early obviously with the interception.

Game 4 so we're pretty much on Standard Gus Time Schedule.

4 Game Gus strikes again. Wasted yet another preseason camp by not going 1sv1s to evaluate talent.

Multiple reports about going 1's vs 1's this preseason.

Sometimes it sucks but the guys playing (albeit poorly) are often the best you got. I am not saying its true about Kim and Horton, but it isn't impossible they are the best we have or the other guys would be playing already.

Exactly. Kim is way too soft and tentative and I don't know what the hell happened to Horton.

We have 5 years if evidence under Gus to know this is not the case.

I don't buy it. Sean White and his inability to win the starting job was more about off the field stuff and seeing the ceiling for the team with him at QB.

KJ showed last year when healthy why he was the back in 2016 before Kam went off.

What glaring example of Gus' not playing the right players exists? Never really understood that narrative.

JFIII may have been a joke, but he was in a room full of them at the position so it was harder to tell.

Last year we stuck with James, Golson, etc...but that line was barely serviceable when they played their best the guys playing now were the ones not playing last year, save Driscoll.

We just aren't as talented as we like to think we are IMO. If we had another schedule you wouldn't see it get exposed as much, but it is was it is.

At the beginning of 2013 Tre and CAP shared carries for a few games before Gus realized Tre was the man.

To be fair Grimes said all of these things early in pre-season camp.

He said

#1 Kim was bad at run blocking but really smart

#2 Tega was good at run blocking but needed to work on pass pro

#3 Trox wasn't strong enough to start

The fact that we have shuffled players on the OL during the season every single year since 2014.

That has more to do with not having an answer than Gus' not knowing what the answer is...can't make chicken salad out of chicken&%^*(

CAP has been a steady NFL back...the only reason he focused so much on Tre in 2013 is the rules favored HUNH and keeping him and Nick in the zone read was wearing teams out. CAP was also quite effective when given the opportunity. He rushed for over 600 yards in 2013 and better than 5 ypc.

That’s not on you, Wanogho. Or the offensive line. That’s an issue with Gus teams.

Brahms was hurt.. It was either start Kim or Tucker Brown. Which one are you going with? We've seen Horton play good, but it was at LG I believe.. add Kim next to him not getting a push and I can see why he's still adjusting.

Don't ask for evidence then invalidate the evidence when it is presented

That's a bit confusing. But not having an answer doesn't mean a coach can't find it.

He usually does, but it takes him 4 games to do it. Which was my original premise. Why are we going in circles?

I don't believe they have found an answer for the OL since 2013. They play teams in the middle of the season with future insurance salesman and high school football coaches on the DL, but when the play NFL guys they look sad again and get whipped on short yardage and in the red zone. Those middle of the year games have padded stats in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. The only time the OL has played at a relatively better than average level was two weeks in November of 2017.
