Was Smart's impactfulness at Bama undersold?

I know Georgia is full of talent, but Smart just came in and out-recruited Saban in his first go around. Saban had, what, five or six recruiting titles in a row?

Was Smart more valuable to Bama's recruiting than we originally thought?

You have to remember Saban also lost Pruitt. He is older and the whispers of him not being here 4 years from now are probably more believable than in the past, etc...Nothing happens in a vacuum. Smart deserves credit for taking uga's situation and to this point capitalizing on it.

I'm referring to recruiting, not the actual games.

I don't know Rillo. Smart always got a lot of credit in the media, bur he got passed on by a lot schools looking for a new coach. So I would say he was not undersold in the press, but was in the coaching searches.

I wouldn't give Nick that good a pass. Heck, when he arrived at Alabama, the fact that'd he'd never stayed anywhere longer than like 4 years or so was always being brought up. Whispers that he'll bolt the NFL have become an off-season tradition at this point.

Well a lot of the recruits are from Georgia, Smart has just been able to block down the state which has an insane amount of talent

I do agree that Smart out recruited Saban in his first "real" year. However, I also think there were several factors that contributed to that.

1. It was the first year of the early signing period, and Smart may have had a better grasp of how to handle that.

2. Alabama took a much smaller class than Georgia.

3. Saban was breaking in a lot of new faces on his staff, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.

That said, the overall average point wise at Georgia was higher per player, and Georgia is still doing a nice job recruiting against Alabama. So, while there were other factors as to why UGA finished #1 in the country last year, we are still doing very, very well. I do believe Kirby had a ton to do with Alabama's recruiting success over the years, but Alabama's success on the field sells itself, so Kirby helped build that, but it is also sustainable without Kirby....at least for awhile. Long term we will have to see if Georgia can continue recruiting well...and long term we will have to see if losing Kirby (And Mel Tucker) will have a slow drain on Alabama's recruiting.

And sometimes a state produces more prospects than another. There are also other relationships in play to consider. I don't say that to undersell what Kirby did in recruiting last year, I just don't know that it will be the norm from now on.

Smart took advantage of relationships he built while under Saban. Then Saban’s new staff couldn’t rebuild all those relationships by nsd.

Smart is a great recruiter and evaluator. He's in one of if not the best recruiting situations in America. He was always going to have high level success there.

Saban replaced all of his staff over the last 2 years and stubbed his toe with the early period stuff. There was going to be a "lull". Bound to be. We'll have the #1 or #2 class this year, because Saban doesn't mess the same thing up twice.

Alabama and Georgia will continue to have rosters stocked with NFL players for the foreseeable future.

Help me out here. The only two places I know that he applied for were the AU job before Gus and the UGA job. Who else passed on him?

I feel like UGA and Bama will be #1 and #2 most years in recruiting as long as both coaches are still there.

THIS^^^^^^^^^^^^ If Kirby keeps the elite HS players then he is in high cotton. Kirby signed a bunch of Georgia players at Bama and about half of them were processed. Richt couldn't sign them all and he had more arrest than Marshall Dillon.

Kirby always got his share of credit for Alabama recruiting. Saban and Smart were a great tandem.

He was always a good recruiter, not surprised at all.

His true impact will take a few years to see. Right now, he's got a lot of hype going on for him, much of which is due to Saban. He's going to need to maintain that for awhile before you can really see what he is doing for himself.

Because no other 1st time coach is getting that hype. So if anything, I think Saban's impactfulness on Georgia's recruiting is undersold.

Smart was hailed as a fantastic recruiter while at Alabama. What else were people supposed to say?
