They didn't have the depth of 2001 Miami but their starting 22 was as good as anyone's in recent memory

2016 Bama was the best team of the BCS/Playoff era, but the ran afoul of simply corrupt officiating against Clemson.
I'm surprised they had 2009 Bama as the lowest rated undefeated team and the 2nd lowest Bama team.
Of course the whole list is suspect with Texas #1. Texas played the weakest schedule of any championship team since WWII.

The Big 12 sucked, but they won a road game in Columbus against Tressel's best Ohio State team. Gotta give them props for nutting up and scheduling that game. 2005 Texas was not quite as talented as other teams, but they did have some damn good players. They also had Vince Young, who was capable of beating anyone on the right day.
Young's performance in the national title game that year is the single best performance in college football history, IMO. That's also the best college football game I have ever seen.
ETA: 2005 Ohio State did not have the same record as Tressel's 2002, 2006, or 2010 teams but they were better. Their two losses were by a combined 10 points against Texas and Penn State, who finished #1 and #3 in the country that season. And they put up about 650 yards on Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.

They had Vince Young and beat the ESPN-appointed greatest team of all-time in the Rose Bowl. Of course that organization is going to put them at #1. It also helps that the game was one of the greatest college football games ever played. Not since the '71 OU-Nebraska game has a match in college football actually lived up to the enormous hype surrounding it.

No our defense arguably was. Our offense led by Hurts at QB and an inconsistent OL prevents that team from being the best.

Unbelievably talented team, but although they were not in the last 20 years, Nebraska 1995's team ended up beating 4 teams in the final top 10 by an average of 49-18. No team came close to beating them. They beat one of the scariest and most dominant teams I ever saw coached by Spurrier in his prime 62-24 in the title game.

I don't totally disagree with you. The only team that you could make a case for is 95 Nebraska. I was just simply saying that 01 Miami would dominate # 1 and # 2. Hell 2008 Florida lost to Ole Miss.

The top 3 games in CFB history are generally considered 1971 Nebraska/OU, 1983 Nebraska/Miami, 2005 USC/Texas for a reason

Not gonna argue 05 Texas at no. 1, they were a DAMN GOOD team beyond just VY though VY drove the bus for that offense and his presence enabled other players to submit great performances, 01 Hurricanes, 99 Seminoles and 04 Trojans would be just as deserving at the top honestly surprised 99 Seminoles ranked no. 10 they were wire to wire no. 1 and really good across the board but its ESPN and they suck Alabama's dick so I see how it is

That list is a joke. Seriously an embarrassment and the writer should be fired for not knowing shite about college football.
I could pick apart practically the entire list as he barely got anything right, but I will just note a few very obvious ones for AU and bama that most AU and Bama fans will agree with.
1. 2012 bama > 2011 bama. Easily. By 10. 2012 bama was great on both sides of the ball. 2011 was not. College football was stronger in 2012 than 2011 as well.
2. 2004 AU would kick 2010 AUs arse. Period. Probably by 10 points. In fact 2004 AU might beat every team listed. Seriously. And they are not even listed. LOL.
3. 2013 AU was better than 2013 FSU. It took a half dozen plays going right for FSU to get a last second win and they almost got blown the frick out. Frankly if out kicker didnt have the stomach flu and kicks it through the end zone like he did 95% of the year, FSU loses. Or if Mason just takes a knee on the last td. Or the fake punt. Or our DBs running into each other. Or Marshall's second half int. Or our kickoff guy pulling his hamstring in the lane that resulted in the late TD. Etc. Play that game 10 times and AU wins 8 and blows FSU out by 20 a couple of times.
That list is retarded.

And we found the blind homer. What really happened was that Auburn had a great gameplan and it took FSU a half to adjust. Once they did, they outscored Auburn 31-10 to end the game.
2013 FSU had as good of a starting 22 as there has been in college football since 2001 Miami. Auburn was not better and they weren't even remotely close in talent.

2001 Miami should be number 1, and I definitely wouldn't rank 2008 Florida above them.
2011 Alabama is too low
2017 Alabama is too high. Should not be above 2010 Auburn or 2000 Oklahoma.

I don’t know why people don’t understand how analytics work, or argue against them.
You can say these aren’t the best teams you watched. That’s fine. But that’s not what ESPN is saying.

That article is about justifying past narratives. No way 2005 Texas is the best...no way the 1st 5 teams on that list are top 5 outside of 2001 Miami.
The analytics side of this story is also flawed...heck if you go by offense and defensive stats vs SOS then 2004 Auburn is likely the best team as an undefeated. Of course, I doubt ESPN would want to apply their analytics to teams that didn't match their desired narrative. It is also why 2011 LSU is left of the list.

Agree. However, my argument would be, if this is what your analytics spits out.......your analytics probably suck. Which ESPN's do.
