How does a new message board get started?

No I'm not starting one. Just a random thought that popped in my head.
What brings people to a message board is other people. But in the beginning, there's no one on there besides the guy who started it.
Is it just a guy that invites his friends to join and then his friends' friends join and it goes on from there? Seems strange for a group of friends posting on a message board when they could just group text or something.

Usually it is a group of people. SixPackSpeak.com is State's biggest board and it was started when a group of six people kept getting banned from the MSU pay board back in the early 2000s.
They originally did an email chain but one guy lacked CPU access at work and would come home to 1000 emails about MSU sports. So they started a message board and eventually others joined and found it.

Yep. Then EliteDawgs started because a lot of sps members were mad that they allowed rebels to post there, so they started EliteDawgs.
