Five high profile silent commits seems pretty noteworthy to me.

Don't get me wrong, it's good news, I'm just not huge on silent commits. First, I can't watch tape of a silent and invest in him as a future player. Second, silents seem to have such a high decommit percentage that I don't want to get my hopes up.

He did kind of off-handily say that they would become public when Saban wanted them to, but I doubt that means a super high profile kid has offered to go public and Saban said lets wait for a better moment.

Who knows, thus the mystery of the silent commit.

If this is accurate, as commit timelines stand, we are looking at possibly Tuitele, Billingsley, and Metchie committing this summer barring any unexpected out of nowhere commitments or guys shutting it down (which both are probably guaranteed to happen). After that most of our targets aren't committing until late Nov.

This is of course with the caveat that everything is fluid and our board/targets will change along with when guys decide to commit.

After all the discussion yesterday on BOL, it's still unclear whether Bama is ready to take commits right now from Billingsley, Metchie and Carter. It sounds like they'll take one from Tuitele.

Carter may still be back and forth on leaning Bama vs ATM. And that might be partly because Bama seems to prefer Dent (1) and Stephenson (2) over Carter and therefore isn't pushing for Carter to commit right now.

I sense they might prefer Milton Wright over Billingsley and that it might depend on how they feel about their chances with 2020 TE Arik Gilbert. But I'm just speculating on that.

ETA-Sidenote: TWatts indicated Bama may have a decent chance of flipping George Pickens. However, not long ago I saw mention of him being a somewhat at risk of not qualifying. That might explain Bama not offering sooner and not appearing to be pushing hard for him.

Then why do you have Billingsley ahead of Wright on your recruiting targets post? Don't give me bad data and then criticize my analysis

It's so damn murky I had trouble deciding which one to put in front. I went with Jahleel because he's openly named Bama his favorite and indicated he's on the verge of committing.

ETA: I wasn't being critical of your analysis; just trying to add what I'd seen on BOL. You're an excellent tea leaves reader, imo.

ETA: TWatts & "insiders" can't share everything they know.

No worries, I know you were just making sure we have all the available information. I was just poking the bear for my own amusement.

QUARTERBACK BATTLES

Who will emerge as the best quarterback at the event? Last year we had a battle between Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields and it was epic. We won’t have that this year, but we have a good mix of 2019 and 2020 quarterbacks on the roster. Will Auburn commitment Bo Nix hold on to the top spot at pro-style quarterback? Or will he be pushed by Wisconsin commitment Graham Mertz or South Carolina commitment Ryan Hilinski, who have both had great springs? Or will it be a 2020 quarterback like Harrison Bailey, Bryce Young or Notre Dame commitment Drew Pyne who wins the day? Instead of a two-player battle, we have many quarterbacks who could steal the spotlight this year.

NO. 1 BEING TESTED

Being the No. 1 player in the country can be a blessing and a curse. New No. 1 Derek Stingley Jr. will be a target throughout the event. There is a loaded group of wide receivers (see below) and there’s a good combination of players with size, speed and route-running ability. And you know the other defensive backs will be looking to show up Stingley, as well. Fellow five stars Akeem Dent, Fred Davis and Chris Steele will all be on hand looking to show they have the same stuff as LSU commitment Stingley.

ELITE OFFENSIVE LINE BATTLE

I’m very intrigued by the offensive line group at the event. The five-stars, center Clay Webb and guard Kardell Thomas (LSU) will be interesting to watch, as both are very physical prospects. But there are others who have had strong springs and are rising up the charts.

How will Alabama commit Amari Kight fare after making a big jump in our last rankings? Will Branson Bragg, a Stanford commitment who also made a huge jump and was arguably one of the biggest surprises of the spring continue his stellar play? How will Arkansas lineman Stacey Wilkins, who just jumped into the Rivals250, do against an elite group of defensive linemen?

And keep an eye on the 2020 class as well, especially Justin Rogers and Chris Morris, who are two of the bigger-name offensive linemen in the group.

RUNNING BACK STARS

The running back group at the event is very good, and it is led by five-stars Trey Sanders and Devyn Ford (Penn State) in the 2019 class and Zachary Evans in the 2020 class (who could play some running back, some receiver and even some slot). But let’s not forget Mark-Antony Richards, who will be battling with Sean Dollars for that No. 1 all-purpose back title. The linebackers and defensive backs will have their hands full with this group.

Rival Views: Who will improve stock most at Five-Star Challenge?

quote:

It’s Five-Star Challenge Week here at Rivals.com, with the entire national staff set to descend on Atlanta for the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented by adidas. The annual event will feature 100 of the top prospects from the 2019 and 2020 classes, and will surely produce its share of news both on and off the field.

How prospects perform at the event can have a major impact on their rankings, especially considering it pits the best of the best against one another for several different competitions. In the past, the Five-Star Challenge has help prospects vault up the rankings and solidify their spot among the nation’s elite.

In this edition of Rival Views, Southeast Recruiting Analysts Rob Cassidy and Woody Wommack debate which prospect will improve their stock the most this week in the Mercedes-Benz Dome.

WOMMACK’S VIEW: WR Wandale Robinson

It’s been quite a spring for Robinson as he has seen his stock skyrocket in terms of his ranking and his list of scholarship offers. This past weekend, Robinson was on an official visit to Michigan and that is on the heels of a recent camp performance at Alabama that saw him leave with an offer that came personally from head coach Nick Saban. Robinson has elite speed and while he’s not the tallest prospect, he more than makes up for it with electric playmaking ability.

At past Five-Star Challenge events, prospects such as Sam Bruce and Tyjon Lindsey, who are similar in size to Robinson, have dominated and shot up the rankings as a result. Robinson is currently ranked as a four-star outside of the Rivals250, but if all goes according to plan I expect him to have quite a showing under the lights inside the dome.

CASSIDY’S VIEW: DB Tyrique Stevenson

Stevenson has momentum on his side. Few players in the country have had camp seasons as impressive as Stevenson, who blew people away at a recent camp at Miami and has impressed everywhere else he’s turned up. Combine his momentum with his size and trademark physicality, and it seems that the stars have aligned for a truly trademark performance in Atlanta.

Stevenson has always had sky-high potential and impressive physical traits, but it seems as though he’s beginning to put everything together as of late. Logic dictates that this could be a big week for the Rivals250 defensive back.

Take Two: Is a fifth-star on way for 2020 QB Harrison Bailey?

THE STORYLINE

In the early 2020 rankings, there is only one five-star quarterback and that’s Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco’s D.J. Uiagalelei, the No. 1 overall prospect in the class.

Ranked second at the position is Harrison Bailey from Marietta, Ga. Bailey has excellent size, a great arm, he’s been a national name since landing his first offer in middle school and he definitely has five-star potential. Everything is lining up for an argument to be made that Bailey deserves a five-star ranking as well.

And he will be at the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented by adidas later this week.

There are questions about his athleticism and especially his mobility in the pocket and that’s why Bailey has not earned that coveted fifth-star yet. Could a huge performance at the Five-Star Challenge push him over that edge during the next rankings cycle?

FIRST TAKE: CHAD SIMMONS, RIVALS.COM SOUTHEAST ANALYST

“I don't think there is a stage too big for Bailey. He is used to eyes being on him and he has been on the stage for a couple of years already. Bailey is the No. 24 prospect in the country, so he is definitely in that five-star discussion. He has a big frame, he has shown he can drive the ball down the field and he has a great head on his shoulders. In this setting, I don't know if there is a weakness for Bailey. He was here a year ago with guys like Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields and Matt Corral, and he more than held his own. It is still early in his recruitment, but Michigan and Tennessee are definitely two schools to watch.”

SECOND TAKE: MIKE FARRELL, RIVALS.COM RECRUITING DIRECTOR

“He has five-star ability. The question is going to be his ability to move out of the pocket. We’re not really going to see that this weekend, but if he’s as good as he normally is and precise and goes out there and dominates, he’s right in the discussion for five-star.

“He’s a little bit methodical, so we have to see if there is a Max Browne factor there. He’s very, very good on film, very impressive since middle school, but we have to see if the ball comes out quickly, if decisions are made quickly and all that stuff. We won’t be able to see much of the agility.

“Michigan and Tennessee both need quarterbacks. Shea Patterson is an injection of life into the quarterback position for Michigan but he won’t be there for long. Bailey would be a potential franchise guy who fits in perfectly in that offense. For Tennessee, I think the same thing. The Vols need quarterbacks, they need big-name guys in the Southeast to commit to them. At quarterback, with his name recognition, it would really make other players take notice of Tennessee.”

THIRD TAKE: TIDESAINT, ALABAMA SPORTS BOARD MEMBER

I don't think the Alabama staff stops recruiting Bailey due to the commitment of Carson Beck. I believe Beck may end up playing solely baseball at the next level because he is ranked in the Top 125 overall for his class as a first baseman.

Thank you.
