10 prospects on the cusp of 5-star status entering The Opening
quote:
Every player attending The Opening Finals is elite. These are the best college football prospects in the country. But only 10 have earned the coveted five-star branding by 247Sports.
Those 10 will be looking to defend that label while everyone else will be clawing to pick up another star or two. There are few settings that present a better opportunity to prove that status than The Opening Finals, which features individual drills in a camp setting, intense challenge competitions for offensive and defensive linemen and, of course, the Nike Football 7-on-7 Championship Tournament.
If you can dominate and rise above within this pack, you’re special.
In advance of The Opening Finals kicking off Saturday in Dallas (with a July 3 conclusion), here are 10 players that we will be watching closely with a fifth star on the line.

GUARD/CENTER CLAY WEBB
Current 247Sports rating/ranking: 95 (40th overall)
Webb is perhaps the safest prospect in the entire 2019 class. The bust potential is almost at zero. But he’s an interior guy all the way and against big-bodied, elite defensive linemen, we’d like to see him dominate to validate the upside needed for that fifth star. Alabama is currently the Crystal Ball favorite.
It's fricking hilarious that Webb isn't a 5-star already. Ridiculous.

CB AKEEM DENT (FLORIDA STATE COMMIT)
Current 247Sports rating/ranking: 96 (23rd overall)
Dent has long been considered one of the top cornerbacks in this class and has hovered around five-star status since our initial rankings release for 2019. This is the type of setting that gives a cornerback the opportunity to stamp a five-star rating and we’re looking for Dent to make that kind of a statement.

quote:
DE/OLB KEVIN HARRIS (ALABAMA COMMIT)
Current 247Sports rating/ranking: 95 (44th overall)
Harris has good film, he dominated The Opening Atlanta regional, and he’s got elite, verified testing numbers. This setting will be a great opportunity to see if his speed can translate against high-level five-star caliber offensive linemen in pads and not just t-shirts.

Only way I think he drops is because of attitud, grade or Mississippi "recruiting tactic" issues.
I'm thinking of this is true it's the latter.

Recruiting dude for UF (Gator Dave) was on Bill King yesterday taking Gator calls about recruiting. Most of it didn't pertain to us, but he got a call that asked if Sanders was still a Gator lean.
He paused and said that he thought Sanders was at best a 50/50 with Bama right now and would probably lean towards Bama (with a slight possibility of Texas entering the recruitment). He then added on his on that Bama looks like it may also be swiping Billingsley who had been the guy UF was hot after at TE and thought they had in the boat.
Kevin Hagan (Bama insider) was on today. He didn't say much noteworthy - said he's been told by staff that their are five high profile silent commitments (but that don't really help me much now). The most interesting thing he shared was though Mal has always said their was no back-up plan if Saban turned us down, the actual back-up plan was Houston Dale Nutt.

Lot's of "nuggets" (and Q&A) yesterday on BOL from TWatts and #1 insider. I studied that stuff, did some more digging around and reshuffled our Top Targets board (kept in 2nd post of this thread) accordingly. Here's a copy below in the next post.
ETA: Per the insider there's a 2020 commit that may go public at any time.

Was the chat yesterday after the 2020 QB went public, or before? They may have been talking about that QB, or did you get the impression it was a different player?

If this is accurate, as commit timelines stand, we are looking at possibly Tuitele, Billingsley, and Metchie committing this summer barring any unexpected out of nowhere commitments or guys shutting it down (which both are probably guaranteed to happen). After that most of our targets aren't committing until late Nov.
This is of course with the caveat that everything is fluid and our board/targets will change along with when guys decide to commit.

He was asked that and he said it's someone other than Carson Beck.

Prospect Survey: Which program deserves title of 'LBU'?
quote:
BRADENTON, Fla. – The Ray Lewis linebacker academy attracted some of the nation’s top linebackers and pitted them against running backs from all over the nation. Rivals.com took the opportunity to survey the attendees on which college they feel rightfully holds the title of Linebacker U. The answers, which were wide-ranging, are listed below.

1. ALABAMA
“I’ve watched Alabama for the last four years and they come out with the best linebackers every year, including one of the best I’ve ever seen in Reuben Foster.” – Rivals250 Ole Miss linebacker/athlete commit Diwun Black
“Clearly, I’m committed to Clemson, but I would just say Alabama. Their defense is always outstanding – and so is Clemson’s – but as a kid I just always looked up to Alabama and their linebackers. Now that I’m going to Clemson I look into their linebackers and see how well I fit.” – Rivals250 Clemson linebacker commit Bryton Constantin
“Alabama. All the linebackers they recruit and all the guys they put into the NFL.” – Class of 2021 linebacker Nathan Kelly
“Because they have beasts like Reuben Foster. They put guys in the first round, like, every year. They always have those beasts.” – Class of 2020 linebacker Chance Coleman
“They just got some dogs at linebackers. That’s why.” – Rivals250 LSU linebacker commit Zach Edwards
“To be honest ... The most hard-hitting linebackers (are at) Alabama and Clemson. Those are the ones I really remember. They just come downhill hard. I’ve watched Reuben Foster’s film. He’s really raw, just a great player.” – Class of 2020 three-star linebacker Stephen Dix Jr.
“I’ll say Alabama for the obvious one.” - Three-star athlete Jashon Watkins

If we truly do have 5 silent commits, it would explain why our staff seems to be slowing down on accepting commits from some guys we thought would be committed to us by now. Guys like Tuetele and Christian Harris to name a couple.
Edit--I just hope that IF we are slow-playing or turning down commits from guys like Christian Harris and Tuetele, that it doesn't burn us like it did last cycle with several guys that we could have signed but instead ended up empty handed holding out for other guys.

New 2020 State Rankings: Southeast Region

Rivals Rankings Week for the 2020 class concludes today with the release of the 2020 state rankings. Here are the top storylines to follow in the Southeast.

Crimson Tide off to a fast start in home state
Alabama is rolling in 2020 and the Tide are off to a hot start in the Yellowhammer State. The Crimson Tide have three commitments already, two from their home state and there will be more. Wide receiver Dazalin Worsham is a Rivals100 prospect, and linebacker Jackson Bratton is in the Rivals250. Worsham’s teammate, Malachi Moore, was recently offered and he is a major cornerback target. Defensive tackle Jayson Jones plans to commit July 4 and he is down to Alabama and Georgia. Running back Roydell Williams and linebacker Quandarrius Robinson are two others in the top 10 that have the Crimson Tide on their mind. It looks like Nick Saban and his staff could do very well once again with in-state prospects in 2020.

Can anyone catch up to Jackson in Mississippi?
McKinnley Jackson is a five-star defensive tackle, and there is not even another Mississippi prospect in the Rivals100 at this time. It is early, very early, but it looks like it will be hard for anyone to knock him off the top at this time. In Mississippi, there are new names that pop up all the time, so we will definitely identify many more talented 2020 prospects over the next year, but the one-time LSU commit has a firm grip on the top spot in his state. Jackson will be competing at the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge soon, so he will have a chance to compete on a big stage against some of the best in the country.
