Enlighten the youth (me)...
What does one do to pass a kidney stone? Just stand there and fight like hell facing the toilet, or is it more a wait and let it slowly work its way out until you gotta piss?

Yes
ETA: After passing 100+ I have had it all from
1. rolling around from the bed to the floor because you feel like you can find a position that will relieve the pain...even though you know it will not help
2. having a stone stop partially in the pecker (actually not the most painful portion of the journey)
3. felt twinges of pain, got off the bus, went and passed the stone, got back on the bus and drove the team to the game (seriously)
4. passed stones in the urine collection cup at the doctors office. (3 times)
5. Loaded my pregnant wife into the car, in labor...on the way to the ER a stone hits me. I get her taken care of, then tell doctor what I have. (They knew me at this ER) Did a scan, saw the stone, gave me the IV. Woke up on the OB floor, in my wifes room...they had stopped her labor. (all true)
6. had to remove a stint by myself, at home, nothing for pain or discomfort. (did not know what a stint was...amazing how long that thing is....the stint that is)
ETA2 - My wife, kids and even my students could many times look at my eyes and say "you have a stone dont you"
One of the worst experiences you can have is to have a large stone crushed. every time you piss for a few days it is like spreading slag rocks on a road. You have to drink lots of fluids but want to start crying as soon as you stat feeling the urge to go.

I've never had the misfortune of a kidney stone, but I feel for all you guys.

Per Mayo Clinic:

Only ever had 1... and it was stuck in my bladder. It was relatively painless, but lots of blood. Normally clotted blood I'd only see in the morning. There is absolutely nothing more gross and horrific than flow shutting off entirely because of a passing clot, except the instant you get everything moving again. Think boy scouts and starting a fire

Also, what seems to have helped me, (calcium oxolate (sp?) stones) is a reduced oxolate diet.
