Scientists worry brain-wasting ‘zombie deer’ disease could spread to humans

It appears only three SEC states are affected now but the disease is spreading all over the country and even some foreign countries. Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is insidious because it's similar to Mad Cow Disease which can spread to people.
Though there are no known cases of CWD in humans at this time, medical scientists are concerned that it could cross the species barrier. Prions are misfolded proteins that cause other proteins around them to misfold. They cause many brain-wasting diseases in humans and other animals.

Deer across North America are dying from a mysterious disease that gradually destroys the animal’s nervous system.

“CWD passes from animal to animal through prions, misfolded proteins that cause other proteins to misfold around them,” NPR reported. “Different prion diseases tend to only harm certain species, but can evolve to overcome those limitations.”
In some herds, as many as half of the animals carry prions.

But direct contact isn’t the only way prions are transmitted. According to the New York Times, sick animals and cadavers can spread prions through plants and soil, which could be coated with deformed proteins for years, perhaps even decades.
quote:
Dunfee told NPR, "if you are hunting in an area where CWD is found, have your animal tested. If it comes back positive, don't eat the meat."

I know a few Bama fans that would like to know if this disease can be transmitted sexually.

They are having some issues with this near to where I live in Arkansas.
I'm not a scientists or anything, but I heard tale that people think this is happening because the herds aren't being thinned enough. Essentially it's an overpopulation problem.

Figures it would be the new kids in the conference.

It's because of liberals. Not even joking.
Our cases are popping up in the ultra liberal places in the state like Eureka Springs. The hippy dippy types over there won't kill deer.

That makes sense. Mad Cow Disease began in domesticated cattle which are crowded together in large populations.
Since the natural predators of deer are virtually absent now, they've been breeding freely. It's logical that an aberration like a prion could get established in an overpopulated area and spread outward.
Because it's also popping up in foreign countries such as South Korea and Norway, this indicates that prions are present in most, if not all, deer herds and is normally held in check by a high natural mortality. When mortality is lowered and deer live longer, the prion has many more chances to take hold.

So now the deer may kill the hippies.

Yep. It's gotten bad enough in Arkansas's liberal zone that the Game and Fish Commission has given the people of Eureka Springs permission to kill them inside city limits. But they won't do it.
The deer there are so tame that I could kill one with a knife and that's no exaggeration. You can walk right up to the damn things. No fear.

Chronic wasting has been an issue in Wisconsin for decades. I’m not a big hunter but my cousins are and they don’t shut the frick up about it but I did learn to never eat venison from anyone you don’t trust.

Y'all are having issues with having sex with deers in Arkansas?

How does fricking deers help with their overpopulation? Do y'all think y'all can satisfy them enough so they won't bang other deers and have babies?

I don't know, bowl. Why don't you tell us? You seem to be the expert around here on all things homo and beastiality related
I'm guessing it's because you're a dick licker. But that's just a guess.

I've stopped eating venison altogether because, with my luck, I'd become the first human to contract deer zombie disease. It's in 3 border states and that's just too close for comfort.

Has the sharkhumper been vacationing in Arkansas?

Because prions are not living structures, immunity is not possible. A prion is neither bacterial nor fungal nor viral and contains no genetic material. No effective medical treatment is known. The illness is progressive and always fatal. - Wiki
They differ slightly by species but it's possible for them to cross between species. Once a rogue prion is in the brain of a human or other animal it causes normal proteins to refold to its shape. How it does this is not known. The refolding causes cells to die, ergo the name Chronic Wasting Disease.

Mississippi Wildlife and Fisheries is terrified of wasting disease as our deer population is getting out of hand

Some dumbasses in south MS illegally imported some deer with CWD that got loose from a high fence after a storm this past year. fricking terrible.

Don’t pet the neighborhood deer on your ski trip

Thanks for the heads up Ken. I eat a lot of venison, and wasn't even aware this was a thing. It's not being widely reported here.
