the music scene wasn't so weak

God, there was a time when the music scene here was so much fun. George's and Chester's were both booking in regular shows of jambands, jamgrass, improv jazz and bluegrass. They happy hour scene was awesome on Friday's where each charged a dollar at the door. George's was from 5-6, then Chester's from 6-7. You'd see Medicine Show down at George's then book over to the Library to see someone like Merle Saunders, Jacob Fred Jazz Oddyssey or Steve Kimock. For a buck each. Then they'd both be playing later that night. Plus bands loved coming to Fayetteville and lots of them came repeatedly and became friends with the locals. I partied with Leftover Salmon multiple times late night.

Dave's on Dickson was a larger venue that existed for a bit that booked a wide variety of acts. Then you had JR's, with Chris King booking great shite (White Stripes played there among lots of other alt/college/indie bands). And Clunk booking Clunk music hall (Modest Mouse played there).

Then the music scene just went to shite as the next generation decided they just wanted to spend money on cocktail bars and the whole jamband scene started to age, and we lost one music venue after another due to non-attendance.

I can't bitch, though, because I rarely get out to see music these days.

There's a few good local bands. But aside from George's (which caterers mostly to country or electronic music, though does get some great bands passing through), damn near every band I've heard is a cover band, that plays songs note for note.

Every band plays covers. But to not put your own style in it is just boring. I'd lose my mind if that was the only option to play.

It's why I miss playing music New Orleans so much.
