A certain DC who's name has come up for our job has been calling instate recruits and basically told one of them that he will offer him if he gets the Arkansas job. I won't say "who" because I don't want to throw my source under the bus. But it is legitimate firsthand knowledge. Recruit is somewhere south of Little Rock FWIW.
Could the Gus/Norvell stuff be a diversion to hire said DC?

If it's Venables I'll support him but we'll be right back to where we were 5 years ago trying to out-Bama Bama. Would be a terrible hire.

I'll take him... defensive genius that hires a power spread OC. That would be ideal to me as long as they can all recruit like crazy.

I agree. It will be like Muschamp at Florida. It worries me that he's been a coordinator for so long. He would have to hire a home run OC.

He’s probably just recruiting and said he would offer the kid if he got the Arkansas job. You know, making it sound like he’s in the running, to make him look better to the recruit.

I just think its interesting that he thinks he has a good shot at the job and is trying to lay some ground work in advance. BTW this kid currently does not hold an Arkansas offer but should.

Venables isn’t telling did recruit he’s got the job. Sounds like he’s acting a bit prematurely.

He's a defensive coordinator who has never hired anyone. I'm just not confident he's head coach material. It's much harder than just being a coordinator. As for his recruiting, he won't get to do as much is he's a head coach. Head coaches are pretty limited in how much actual recruiting they can do. Assistants have a lot more freedom.
Venables would be asked to assemble an entire staff. He's never hired anyone and has never been a head coach. I shudder at the thought of him going out to hire assistants. Who would want to work for a guy that's learning on the job?

The reason bama is so good is because of Sabans recruiting it's all about what the head coaches priorities are.

He’s been on the radar for long time. With Gooden's flakiness I figured in the summer Ferrell would be in the class.
