If all else fails, why not Venables?

Obviously no HC experience and not really any SEC experience, but dude is an A+ recruiter who not only knows Texas from his days at OU, but also is regarded as an elite defensive mind and has run Hand in hand with a Gus-esque offense.
Also, Clemson is essentially an SEC school... region and culture wise, and he has lots of experience playing SEC teams and elite rosters

I honestly completely agree and think he should be one of the top on our list

Why hasn't landed one of the numerous head coaching jobs he's interviewed over the last decade?
There is your answer.

No Arkansas ties, but if AD chick was actually telling the truth, he checks every single box she said as criteria for a new coach... Obviously though, we all know she is not making the final call, and it would be kind if Risky with a first time AD (which it could be) and a fits time HC.
He could also essentially be Smart 2.0

I don’t see a Smart/Venables like HC working here. We need to be innovative and offensive with a solid defense that can tackle, run, bring pressure that forces turnovers that lead to points.
We won’t get enough top end defenders to consistently perform at that level week in and week out. That isn’t mentioning the number of plays offenses are now running to gas the defense. Would think the program would want to head in an offensive HC direction with the rules and success of RPO.

A lot of first-time coaches tear it up, if you think about it. Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma is 11–1 right now. Oklahoma was also Bob Stoops' first job, and he took them to five NC games. Georgia was Mark Richt's first HC gig. Swinney at Clemson. Chip Kelly at Oregon.

But Riley was already on staff and stepped into the position. I do not see venables starting anew somewhere else and being successful, at least considering Arkansas in that scenario..

Don't think he has made himself available for stepping stone non P5 / shite P5 schools.

The last AD to have this authority was Coach Broyles and those days aren’t coming back.

This is the truth. He hasn't been very interested in getting a head coaching gig. He has been waiting for his ideal job. Which apparently Arkansas is one of his ideal gigs. When he got the job at Clemson he told his bosses he didn't intend to leave there unless it was for a certain position or two or three. All this "he interviews terribly" is bullshite. He is very well respected among his fellow coaches and administrators.
If you were to ask Terry Don Phillips who he would like to see get the Arkansas job he would tell you it's Brent Venables.
You guys can scoff if you want, but that is what I was told personally from the folks that used to be his boss at Clemson.
We could do much, much worse.
And again, this myth of Arkansas not being able to get defensive recruits is pure bullshite.

I'll get behind just about anyone they decide to hire at this point. I just wanted to address some of the nonsensical points people bring up about Venables.
Posted on 11/26/17 at 10:29 am to BoarEd
It's not the sensible approach, but it's what the money wants.

Posted on 11/26/17 at 10:33 am to ArHog
No, the sensible approach is you hire someone who can build a first rate defense and bring along the offense incrementally until you have the best of both worlds. Similar to what Saban did at Alabama.
A team built on a great defense is more stable than a team built on great offense.
The great offense will win you games now, but the great defense will win you more games over the long haul.
Think it doesn't work? Will Muschamp is SEC coach of the year for doing exactly this at South Carolina. Which, by the way, is a school with even fewer resources that Arkansas.
If it can work there, it can work here. But this contradicts the groupthink that we can't field a competent defense and need to score 60 points a game.
Arkansas will cut off its nose to spite its face. Just watch and see.

No one is going to go against Barnhill and Broyle's number #1 rule when hiring a HC for Arkansas, head coaching experience.
This isn't a program for on the job training.

Which is exactly what Bert did for years...and even admitted it... So Don't give me this stuff about someone not being a HC before and having to learn.
Venables is FAR more qualified than guys like Norvell etc who have never regularly coched against SEC type talent in championship atmospheres.
