Remember playing video games and decimating the computer when you were a kid? The AI difficulty would be turned down and/or you would play with an all star team versus the computer's scrubs? It was fun as hell...for a few games, maybe even a few days, or maybe even a few weeks.

But after a while boredom crept in, and you either played a different game or adjusted the gameplay to make it more of a challenge. Even for a 10 year old, dominating from beginning to end 99% of the time was a fleeting pleasure.

Apparently, Nick Saban doesn't have this "bored with easiness" gene that most of have. Call it a strength or a personality defect, whatever it is, he just doesn't get bored beating up on inferior competition. Most people would have moved on to something else, sought out another challenge. But not him, he's perfectly content doing the same thing over and over for years on end while ruining the experience for everyone else.

Classic intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation.

He's not motivated by winning or any other prize. He's a perfectionist, and isn't satisfied just to win - even in dominating fashion. His satisfaction comes from achieving perfection, which is unobtainable long term and why he continues to want more.

It's kinda awesome.

Tuscaloosa hit the nail on the head. Saban hasn't gotten bored with success because his idea of success has not been met.

His idea of success is a team with absolutely zero flaws. One that gives up zero yards on defense, can score on demand, and receives zero penalties. One that is not just called "impossible to beat" by disgruntled fans of the opponent team, but one that is 100%, literal-sense of literal, impossible to defeat.

Until then, Saban is not satisfied. And his ruthless pursuit of this goal is beautiful to watch as a Bama fan. That is why we are not bored either.

Not that any Bama fans care, but I haven't watched a Bama game all year, and likely won't until the LSU game.

They are boring.

For Saban, "another challenge" is doing it with a new crop of kids.
