Mal said himself that if he didn't come back to Tuscaloosa with Saban on that plane, he was afraid to come back at all.
But the fact that Saban is your coach, because another coach you offered turned you down beforehand, is very lucky

Well, let's see...
Denny decided to invest in football (and bring in lots of money from Jewish households in the NE that were victims of antisemitism). He built a decidedly nice and advanced campus for the Southeast at that time.
Wallace Wade (The first "Bear") comes in and makes Alabama a powerhouse and the first Southern team to attend and win The Rose Bowl (1925). Alabama becomes the darling of the entire Southeast and wins a few more of those. Wade decides to leave and go to Duke of all places, but suggests hiring Frank Thomas ( a protege of Knute Rockne). Thomas keeps the power rolling and along the way head out to recruit Don Hutson from Pine Bluff, Arkansas and comes back with Hutson and Paul "Bear" Bryant. They win some Rose Bowls too.
Bama falls on hard times in the 1950's as Bryant is climbing the coaching mountain. He "hears mama call" and leaves College Station for Tuscaloosa. While at College Station he coached a guy by the name of Gene Stallings. Bear becomes legend. Then he retired and died almost immediately.
Bama putters along until hiring Gene Stallings in 1988. He wins a NC in 1992, then the wheels fall off. Enter the "Mike" years...Dubose, Price, Shula. Other fanbases begin to gloat and mock the Tide. Meanwhile, a guy named Saban takes LSU to a NC and leaves for the NFL. One of Bear Bryant's mentorees, Mal Moore, decides to go after Saban after he hears he is unhappy with coaching in the NFL. The whole story is not known right now, but somehow, Moore convinces Saban to leave. There is a confirmed call between Saban and Gene Stallings during this time. Stallings was somehow involved in convincing Saban.
The rest will continue making history until the next decline. Not as much luck as one would think, although some is involved.
