To answer the question honestly, the first was sort of luck. Frank Thomas stumbled across a tall kid in rural Arkansas who projected to be a serviceable end. That connection with Bryant allowed UA to lure him away from aTm.
No luck at all involved in the Saban hire. Mall threw all he had at Saban and got shot down. He settled for Rodriguez, but when that fell through, he cashed in the last of his chips and went after Saban again, and managed to win him over. All credit is due to Mal for going back to Saban after he'd been rejected.
