Why is the FBI releasing info about who they are investigating? That doesn't seem productive.

They purposefully let the investigation be known once they had enough from the initial investigation. They know that, as they continue to investigate, schools across the country will now basically work for them as additional investigators. None of them want the FBI to find it before they do and, with people going to jail, none of them are going to risk a cover-up if they do find something.

Trying to get targets who are being watched but haven't been publicly identified yet to react in an incriminating way. Like suddenly somebody starts deleting emails or losing school-supplied phones.
