Barry Odom wasn't handed an awesome team

That seems to be a common thought.
2015 went 5-7 with him as D.C.
He got handed 2016. Most of the good/great defensive weapons graduated or went to the NFL. His 2016 roster wasn't great, and he had to recruit coming off the protests and 2015 record.
I'm not defending his coaching this team, or anything he has done this year or last. But, the truth is he wasn't handed an awesome or even a 9-3 potential team.
It doesn't really matter, because what he was handed, he didn't do anything with. No improvement, no player development, nothing. But, let's quit saying that he got handed a good roster. Because he really didn't.

He wasn't handed total shite. He's got enough talent on offense to put up far more points in conference than the peewee league joke he and Josh have "coached."
The D wasn't what it was, but it should have been able to handle Purdue.

You're right, he wasn't handed total shite.
I think this D could have been or could be better is Odom hadn't been in over his head and change the scheme at the same time.
That, coupled with Heupel's offense is the perfect storm to make this team complete shite.
Just saying. Odom wasn't handed the Keyes to a Porsche and crash it. He was handed the keyes to a Kia, and crashed it. If Odom had a loaded roster, it wouldn't be this bad. If this roster had better coaching, it wouldn't be this bad.
It's just that Odom had a very steep learning curve, and didn't have the talent of players to overcome any deficiencies in coaching. At the same time, I think any coach would struggle with what he came into

Eh.
An experienced HC has us at 3-1 on the season and an experienced HC last season prolly has us 6-6 at worst.
Barry is just a clueless phony of a HC.

I don't think anyone is saying he was handed an awesome team. He also wasn't handed a dumpster fire. We are a dumpster fire now.
BTW - He certainly played a role in dragging down Charles Harris' draft stock.

Meh. I'd say it was at least a Mustang.

Offense was pretty bare. Defense he just totally F'd up. That being said I think I see more improvement on defense than offense so far. I think these 30 second drives just give teams way way too many chances. Im tired of Heupel and have been for awhile

Geez another BO apologist. He got beat by talent from Middle Tennessee for fricks sake. He got bent over by a coach with 2 games of experience with Purdue talent. He should have taken the Memphis job but he thought he was ready for the big time and he was wrong. Have fun being the LB coach at Wyoming.

I read that the Purdue team that demolished mizzou this year had majority of the same guys that went 3-9 last year they returned 11 starters on both sides of the ball and look we returned 15 and we've dropped off dramatically.

He was handed better talent than being the worst team in the FBS which we very well may be, but the roster had several holes and he's only had 1 full class.
Just the facts.

He gave up 40 points to MoSt, that wasn't an aberration, that is his team.

Obviously. Not sure that's on point with the OP though.

He was handed a top 10 national defense.

Yeah. Until he undid all of Steck's schemes and failed miserably in teaching a new one.

The 2015 defense was a top 10 unit with Brothers and Simon making their run fits on the weak side putting the offense off schedule on early downs.
How many snaps did those guys get for Missouri in 2016?

He wasn't "handed" it. He was the coordinator for it and did it despite having a horrific offense.
Then you lose two all Americans in Brothers and Brady. The scheme change didn't make any sense, I agree.
All that said, we should be significantly better than we are and if that's not coaching then I'm not sure what else it could be.

Scherer was a pretty good LB last year, Harris and Penton were both NFL talents.
It was pretty apparent to everyone Cross/Odom destroyed that defenses identity from the get go. No one was on board with it and the players almost seemed to actively rebel against it.
Mizzou should have won 6 games last year minimum.

And when you have multiple guys leaving for the NFL and trying to audition their last year basically, it was a total disservice to very good players to run that BS read/react.

None of those guys played WLB or FS. Those two positions are the identity if you are running a 4-3 Tampa 2.

Sounds like Barry should have left the defense alone until he got the players he needed to change to what his vision is.
Barry Odom has Hillary Clinton syndrome, he believes it's "his time" and hes "the one" to build Mizzou. The guy is a travesty as a HC.
Let's remember that this team has a lot of talent, the 2015 class was maybe the best Mizzou ever signed.
